Quite possibly the stupidest question I've ever asked, but we're having an argument in the office and google isn't helping.

If you buy an off peak train ticket, travel into london during off peak, but return during peak time, is your ticket valid?

I'm sure in the past I've travelled at 10am off peak, returned at 5pm (on peak) and still gotten through barriers all over the place.

No it's only valid for off peak travel.

You will probably get through the barriers but if your ticket gets checked by a ticket douche then you might be in bother.

It's not valid and it won't get you through the barriers.

Well I can only comment on commuting in/out of London Waterloo.

I've definitely got in/out at various barriers between London and Bedford.

Fuck it though, looks like I'm stuck at Ecobuild from 11am to 6pm :-(

You could try it, then if it backfires you could play dumb and offer to pay the difference.

Might do that. Ticket will be on the company anyway, they just don't want to pay peak!

You'll be fine, done it plenty of times between Bedford/London. Although saying that i've rarely had my ticket checked on the return back to town, usually it's on the way down.
