There was a story at my work that when the directors were interviewing for a receptionist just over a year ago there was a lass they were going to offer the job to but they looked at her facebook (public profile) and didn't like some of the stuff they saw so gave the job to someone else Obviously could just be one of these office rumours but I really wouldn't put it past my bosses to do something like that

That does happen and I think that's perfectly acceptable. It's her own fault for leaving it public. But to ask for passwords is ridiculous.

Yeah passwords is OTT. I guess if it's a public profile then it's fair game.

I don't see why an Employer would use an online internet doss house as reference for employment suitability?
Bit like part of your interview being them sitting in the pub casually observing your conversation.
Pathetic if you ask me.

Surely it's illegal to ask those kinds of questions? Isn't it against the law for someone to use someone else's credentials to log into a computer/website?

Don't have one and can't say I've missed it since it went.
Can't you make it so you are unable to be found in the searches? Can just say you don't have one then?
