I know there have been a couple of threads regarding the general rules.

But as with everything on the Internet it seems 50% say yes and 50% say no.

So what is the deal with the HID stuff? Wanting to convert the M3 for better light, this will be done using proper shrouds in projector headlamps so will be same light pattern as regular lights not blinding anyone etc.

So do I now need levellers and washers?! Or are they only testable if they are present?

I dont think anyone knows for sure until it all comes in properly.

Most people saying it will be ok are saying "will be ok mine passed" but the new regs arent even in force yet, so anyones guess really

If they fail, then remove and fit standard bulbs with your free retest

Second question is to buy new std headlamps and convert them using shrouds (either plain or styled) with angel eyes purchased separately OR get projector units off eBay that look oem ish but have angel eyes and shrouds in place.

Both just require bulbs and ballasts to be hid

They are illegal when retrofitted without headlight levelling and washers, but will not fail an MOT. Like tinted windows, which can be illegal, but you won't fail the MOT for them.

I have got the new not regs through and to what I understand it needs proper washers fitted and proper levelling.

Best way would to plug old bulb in and that will do.

Rules state they should fail.

But in most cases won't

Same as having no catalytic convertor

I have a copy of the MOT rules from Jan 2012.

Section 1.7 - Page 1 states :

"Vehicles equipped with High Intensity Discharge 3. (HID) or LED dipped beam headlamps may be fitted with headlamp washers and a suspension or headlamp self levelling system.

Where such systems are fitted, they must work; however, it is accepted that it may not be possible to readily determine the functioning of self levelling systems. In such cases, the benefit of the doubt must be given"

I've bolded the bit I think is most important, HIDs are a grey area but reading that to me means :

If you have self levellers and washers they must work but are no compulsory.

Thanks, my local MOT place are friendly. They would fail it if the beam pattern was ririduculous and blinding oncoming people. Just because they don't have washers I doubt they will fail it on but you never know.

This is my next job for the car i think, will do same time i do service.

Fitting headlight washers would be easy, fitting self levelers not so much. Would like to fit a set to the MiTo but don't want it failing an MOT

i am an mot tester, you don't need washers or self leveling adjusters it is for cars with them fitted as standard bud new cars fitted with hids from factory has to have them and they have to work hope this helps u all out
