can you get a kit for example that would allow me to polish some alloy, without removing it from the engine? as in dremel type attachments for the fiddly bits?

Yeah I'm sure you get a kit on eBay, they fit a dremel and you get different grades of abrasive.

Aye Nic, can buy kits with the tool included for about 50quid, I use them for the nuclear impellers at work. Search google/ ebay for '240v 3mm die grinder' and see if that sort of thing looks the part

Depends if you want it done right or you want to fuck about. The amount of swarf and metal powder then various grades of abrasive dust that'll be kicking about your slightly expensive engine bay if you did it in situ.
Or.
Take it off and I can bling it.
You could try and clean the casting marks off with summat like this.....clickage .....or sand it all down by hand but it has to be smooth before you start the buffing.
Then give it some with summat like....click me cunt .... you'd have to mask off your engine bay and especially your windscreen as all this shizzle is abrasive innit..
If you do sand it down by hand to about 400grit I'm sure I've got a couple of tapered mandrels you can borrow and maybe a polishing mop and compound.
