Does my head in that it buzzes constantly...

Any way to sort it out without putting phone off / airplane mode?

Without switching the phone off, the only way to sort it is to switch the speakers off

or just put your phone away from the speakers.

Not easily; you'd be better off re-positioning the speakers to be further away from the mobile. Would need to shield and ground, essentially create a faraday cage around the gear, the speaker/hifi setup to remove the RF interference.

I read this could be achieved by looping the speaker cable through a ferrite ring a few times.
Tried that and didnt work for me.

Some sort of screening? Some docks say they're not iPhone compatible when you drop your iPhone in. They say you should stick it in airline mode.

It'll just be shielded.

Wrap some tinfoil around the speakers, bet that would stop it.

It will be an anti static shield around the speaker. The best thing to do is just get an old anti static bag that PC internals are delivered in and just rest your phone on it. I've used this method for quite sometime with a set of speakers I use in my Uni room and it works a treat!

Edit - This is the video I found that convinced me to try it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kXNJPgDUomM

I got exactly the same results

I'm surprised Anti-static works, usually you have to ground the shielding.

If it stops the interference it'll stop your reception.
