The BMW M5 has proved that it is not only capable of hitting speeds of 300 km/h (186 mph), but also manages to protect its occupants in case something goes wrong during such a blitz journey.
Am F10 M5 was being driven at or close to this speed on a “no speed limit” portion of the A81 German Autobahn on Tuesday, when the driver noticed that another car was entering the highway in front of him, swerved to avoid it and hit the dividing guard rail, which sent the car in to the other guard rail. The M5 thumbed over multiple times on the grass next to the road before coming to a halt.
The 60-year old driver, together with a 20-year old passenger, all survived the crash, even though they were severely injured. The two sons of the driver, one driving an M6 and the other one an M3, who were following him, quickly arrived at the scene of the crash and used a fire extinguisher on the engine compartment as smoke was coming out of this. The vehicle that cut off the M5 has reportedly fled the scene of the crash.

shit the bed, thats a goner
still shows the more modern cars are a heck of a alot safer, not many people can say they rolled a car at 186 and come out of it still breathing/in one pice

Really does show you how well techonology / car building has come!
I wouldn't expect to see a car looking like that from those speeds

The outcome would have definitely been different if he had hit something substantial. Technology or luck? A little from column A and loads from column B.

Autobahn so no speed limit unless stated. Other driver should of stopped though any damage will come from insurance

It hit the central divide then flipped over a few times and finally landed where you see it in the picture, if you hadn't worked out already from this being a BMW forum, only reason the car did so well is because it's a BMW, Superior build quality.

I can't tell what you're getting at. Would it have come off just as unscathed if it had hit a bridge pillar or something similarly substantial? I doubt it.

I agree with Ed, if that had rattled into a bridge or sign post of some kind then no matter how good the build quality it would have been split in 2.

Probably luck has a lot to do with it.
Yes it would be alot worse if it had hit a bridge pillar etc. But if it was an older 5 series/older saloon car I'm sure it would look a lot worse from the same speed/situation

I was just being sarcastic, due to the feeling I got from the forum members, was almost like it's because it's a BMW that it's survived rather then object it hits at them speeds.
Would have been flattened, I've seen the Ford Focus crash that 5th gear did and that was 120mph, the car ended up around 1 meter in length so 186mph would have been fatal for all, even the poor dog if it had hit something with a large mass.

Very impressive.
I would of thought the other car didn't even see them.

The BMW was doing 83 meters per second, goes to show that just because it's legal it might not be that sensible a thing to do on the motorway. Other cars are going to be pulling on and off the motorway, overtaking trucks and other stuff - it's pretty difficult for a person to accurately judge the speed of something travelling towards them.

How has it been determined that he was going 186mph when he had first contact with anything?
Obviously this post is missing the source article.
I just wondered as to what speed he managed to get down to before what is obviously an epic crash sequence began.

tbf, it doesnt specify it was doing 186, just says that it was close to it...
also i imagine travelling at that speed you wouldnt have a great deal of time to brake if someone pulls out on you, you'd be on top of them before you knew it also for the car to roll over 'multiple times' i imagine he was doing 'close' to 180ish.
