You can definitely teach yourself. My neighbour taught himself acoustic. He's not bad at all.

My Dad had lessons however, and is grade 6 after 3 years. But then he has musical fingers from playing clarinet in the Army.

Acoustic
6 string
Yes

I have an LAG 4 seasons Spring 6 string and it's lovely to play. Some cheap guitars have a thick neck and can be very hard on the hands to begin with [/gay]

I would say not to buy new, get yourself a nice second hand acoustic from gum tree or eBay or somewhere, you'll have a better guitar that you would and it'll be easier to learn with, IMO

I'd love to learn guitar but i just know my patience/temperament isnt good enough and I'd end up smashing it over my own head.

Electric is a bit more fulfilling in terms of boshing away on it making noises a bit like tunes that you know.

Acoustic is where you actually learn to play.

If anything, acoustic is slightly better because its more forgiving in terms of touch and feel. I found that with an electric every single mistake is amplified hugely, whereas the acoustic enourages you to be a bit more gentle.

I took classical lessons at school then self taught electric after that via tabs. Just got an acoustic now and never pick it up. Would like to get myself a 7string and get back into it.

If your into rock/metal john then buy an electric, a cheap amp and a distorsion pedal. You'll get bored with acoustic as it wont sound anything like

The electric, and learn via TAB thats the easiest way to get a half decent sound out of a guitar quickly.

harder to get the higher notes plus i find the strings harder to press down. saying that neither of my guitars are amazing, both made by west field so just cheap.
