If you buy the main hoops where the bends are done then the rest shouldnt be too bad if you follow a known design.

and you can weld....
and you can cut profiled joints....
and you can get the correct tube.... (seamless, proper wall thickness)

Have a read of the MSA Blue Book (online) and see what is recommended for materials and cage design

A guy by me who makes cages will make anything with any cuts you want for you to take away to weld. Saves him a lot of time as most of it is in the welding.

Try a cage builder by you. They may do it but some won't as the labour is where they make the real money.

^^ this. I spoke to a local cage builder and he said its £75 worth of material and it will cost £320 when done. I personally wouldnt want to do it myself because I'd like it to work should I crash

i wouldnt want to take a premade measurement and go with that, you want to make something that fits tight to your actual car, even cars that are the same model will have slight variations in measurements and the pre made cages you buy are usually cut slightly too big and are designed for you to fit it snug and trim to size

Do bear in mind that even with a pipe bender, you've still got to make sure those bends are right. The roll hoop on my cage has 5 bends and it'd be so easy to write a couple of metres of tube off if you got one of them wrong. It definitely wasn't a risk I was going to take when I got my cage, I bought all the bent sections then just got lengths of straight tube to make up the rest.

Also, is you're mate charging? making up the straight sections on my cage took somewhere in the region of 16 man hours, if you're making up the bent sections as well I imagine that could build up pretty quickly.

Common sense, take your time research bending calculations etc,

I mate one about a week ago for my mates mk1 escort,
Took me a weekend,
I do a shit load of hydraulic/coolant bending at work so had the jist of it already.

An we did it properly, cutting holes in the floor an dropping the legs through rather than sitting it on boxes' to be able to weld it right round.

Buy one, it's not as if they're expensive and at least you'll know it'll be safe.

However if you do make one please pop in and see me so i can laugh at it

Made this one me self, its out of seamless steam pipe,a little smaller diameter than roll cage
tubing but stronger as the wall thickness is bigger

Its also a very tight fit in the car! (struggled to get it in).

Copied the design off a cage I sore for sale.

also i remember a thread the OP showing some arch welding work he'd done, considering that i think it should be well left alone

Hardest bit is profiling the cuts to whatever they need to meet and if you get it wrong you'll have a big air gap to weld over.

I'd probably buy bits if I did it again, and I've got access to all the gear to do it. For me its very easy to waste money, particularly if you're using proper tube.
