do both the laptop/ipad and apple tv need to be on the same network or do they communicate directly with each other for airplay? i dont have dhcp on my "network" at uni and my router just acts as a wap, so if they communicate over the network then its no good to me

They need to be connected to the same WiFi. Unsure if there is a work around.

You got an iPhone? Can you not use tethering to set up a mini wifi network? Providing the stuff you want to airplay is already downloaded and you don't want to stream it. (Data charges)

seems like a faf, i just want it to work like it should. no worries ive just ordered a 5m hdmi-thunderbolt port. can just plug the laptop into the tv rather than stream
