I have a new type licence that I have had for about 8 years. I have access to a ford transit beaver tail transporter and I need to collect a car from a friends but basically am I legally covered to drive it? It's a Mk3 golf GTi that needs collecting people if know the weight limits.

Cheers

You have B which gives you 3.5t max.

Need to see how heavy the Transit is.

Model number is engine power then weight, so eg.

115T350 being a 115 brake 3.5t

Can also do it off the reg if you have that.

You then need to know the tare weight so you can calculate payload and the weight of the Golf.

What is the tare weight?

I believe the Transit is 2200kg and the golf is about 950kg.

So going by that I'm ok?

Unladen weight.

Going on those figures you're fine assuming the plates agree. Most likely to be a 350, the heavier ones are rare.

As far as I am aware if it falls into class 7 so 3.5t rating your not covered. Also you need to check loading weight as alot of pickup style transporters I.e transits the loading weight is minimal and you struggle to get alot of cars on legally whether you can carry the weight or not.

Payload is typically over a ton so you're OK with Focus/Astra size and a bit more if you check it.

Full of fuel and passengers you'd bring that down a bit but its still within tolerance for that example.
