What's the best way? I'm wanting to learn French.
Are there any iOS apps that are good? I saw someone suggested podcasts are good. Both of the following have been recommended:

Rosetta Stone receives mixed reviews and is quite expensive.

If you want to learn to speak then the best way is to actually talk to a real person.

I downloaded Rosetta Stone russian (from the spcial place). Installed it, then got bored. You have to really WANT to do it. Its much easier to learn from a person that speaks the language, i learnt finnish that way. Cant read or write tho, just speak.

Rosetta Stone works to some extent but you need to be using it daily for it to have any real affect.
A personal tutor is a better solution but you really need to have constant practice face-to-face with someone that's fluent in the language for it all to 'stick'.

I reckon I would be able to speak French within a month if I stayed there. It was a skoosh case at school.

It's funny, I've completely forgotten French, yet if someone speaks it to me it comes flooding back. I tried learning Spanish with Rosetta stone, didn't think much of it. Going on a course to learn sign language soon paid for by work hopefully!

I've used pimsleur to learn a few bits and pieces before going abroad
Works quite well to learn the basics but not sure how good it would be if you're wanting to get to a good standard tbh

I can't disagree more. I had a dutch friend teaching me "dutch". Needless to say when I went over to the Netherlands I got a few funny looks when using the phrases he gave me

I'm still slowly leanring Italian, I got the Itralian for Dummies book on my iBooks for on the tube etc, then plan to get Rosetta Stone as found the tasters really good
