Used to use it until I found google, now use them instead.

Using a different DNS isn't noticeably faster for anything unless you have some problem with the old one.

I downloaded something called NameBench and it said OpenDNS was 51.5% faster than my current (Sky) DNS servers.

I am tempted to somehow set up my own DNS caching servers because I don't like the idea of ISP and other DNS servers doing hijacks on things like incorrect domain name searches.

Thats all a complete waste of time. Just use 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4.

I use Google too. Was more reliable than Sky, which was pretty crap in Brum actually.

I also use opendns, purely as its safer than my ISPs and there's no DNS blocking

Pretty sure I can't change the DNS on my Sky router, I keep meaning to replace it though!

If you force your DNS settings in windows, I think it'll override what's set in your router?

My ones are google DNS, yes you can set them manually in windows.

Why is that a waste of time?

I'm not sure I am happy with a DNS resolver trying to redirect any website requests to Google or to a page trying to sell me stuff, I think I have a valid reason for wanting to set up my own resolver locally?

Nothing wrong with setting up your own DNS servers, gives you more control.

OpenDNS is good for blocking naughty shit and controlling web access to a bunch of computers.

I disagree, using different DNS servers can make your browsing experience alot faster.

What is the best way of doing this on a Mac or even some kind of Linux flavour - BIND?

Im sure you can manually set DNS settings in OSXs network settings the same as you can in windows?

My wife has a MPB but I havent spent much time on tbh

I think he meant setting up a DNS server at home, not changing the DNS settings.

I did use OpenDNS on the router setup side until there was an issue with a few sites. Switched to Google on the PC side as per Johns IP's above and had no issues since. Just left it on them.

aye, but if its quicker, safer and doesnt have domains blocked, I see no reason not to use.
