This is the planned route at present - secured some good hotels due to early booking

Can't wait

Awesome I intend to do Route 66 at some point but need a good few weeks off work to do it! How many weeks you do Route 66 over? How many doing this over?
What car?

ordered a convertible - so will be mustang or something similar
Route66 was over 18 days (with 3 night in chicago, 2 night in Santa Fe and 2 nights in LA - rest was 1 night stop overs. Did around 3300 miles on Route 66
This one is 15 days and estimated at about 2500 miles

I didnt think you could do Route 66 anymore as some if it is closed off or no longer exists
any particular reason you are not do the coast route between San Franciso and Los Angeles?
I assume you fly into LA? Why not do a circle?
The West Coast route looks awesome though and something I defintely want to do.

you can travel apart of route66 but the I40 cuts between it so forever crossing over the i40
Route66 now ensures you visit all the historical land marks and places that existed on the Route
Once in Arizona its gets a bit rural and actaully stops - dead end
Want to spend more time in San Fransico as we have been LA before - We fly in San Fransico and only pick the car up on the 4th Day as parking is so expensive in San Fransico - other we would have to pick the car in LA for it to be parked up for 4 days in San Fransico

Look forward to pics and write up of your west coast route. I don't think I would have the finances or incline to do both so will watch with interest as definitely want to do one of the other within the next 3 years.

I think they are both different in so many ways. Route66 allows you to capture the cultures as its so different as you travel from East to West

Looks like a nice trip, but I'd seriously reconsider your choice of car.
When we did highway 1 we had a coupe and I've got to say, the novelty wears off pretty quickly. Next time I'll choose an SUV or luxury sedan for pure quality and practicallity.

we had a convertible for part of route66 until it broke down
Loved every min of it although its slightly less practical with boot space but happy to trade that off for open air driving

Fair enough, if that's your thing.
I don't mind cruising with the top down, but for several hours of drive each day I'll choose comfort next time.

I think I'll likely be getting a Mustang for my trip, but I'd really like to go balls out and get a Challenger SRT or somethin like that.

I wonder people from the US get excited about "doing the M1" in England?
I'm thinking no.
