seems strange. left the lights and radio on last night then went to start the car and it just kept clicking, with all dash lights on.
today, went and got some jump leads, came home and decided to try to see if it would start, and it did.
what's going on here?

The lower humidity in the winter months means electrons don't hang about in the air, but are stored up in people.
One person can store up to thousands of volts of static electricity.
You most likely jump started the car with static electricity without even knowing it.

when i had the car serviced/inspected a few weeks back, the guy said the alternator/auxillary? belt was badly perished and needed replacing soon-ish, so my first thought was it had snapped.
left it to run for 15 minutes and it's fine now. very strange.

Get it replaced then before your stuck somwhere in the freezing cold in the dark with a car with no lights, heat etc. Cause the belts snapped and hasn't charged the battery

Do you wear summer sandals when out for a winter walk?

They do recover a bit over time, not usually enough to start if its been completely flat but its possible.
Could also be that the connections are loose as Dave says, and yesterday it couldn't draw the current in addition to the battery being a bit flat.
Either way I'd check it over properly.
