My wifes micra k12 2004 has been doing a whine noise on cold start ups, which increases in loudness with revs. Settles down once car is warm. Jacked the car up today, did an engine oil and filter change while i was there. Couldn't hear the whine noise but there was a constant rattle noise whilst at idle coming from the side of the gearbox, There is a large black box/casing thing on the side of the gearbox and it was coming from inside this part. Just wondering how i can diagnose what the problem is. This is a picture from the haynes of where exactly its coming from, ignore the arrow.

Use a screw driver put your ear to it the noise will be amplified k12s are not common for gearbox issues also did you check the level of the box

my ear was right up next to that black part on the box and thats where it was coming from

as far as i know you cant tell if the level on the box is ok as it just outflows from filler hole when there is too much in?

initially i thought the whine was going to be the alternator but then heard this rattling on gearbox side

Whines and vibrations can transfer about the best way to pinpoint it is with a screw driver checking diffrent parts and the filler is the level bung as you said.

Change the oil in the box but sounds like a diff bearing going

Hope ya get it sorted!
We got my mrs a 2005 1.2 K12 thinking it'd be a reliable car. Its currently in the garage as it was loosing power and slightly shaking at tickover. They think its the Throttle Body, £600 + vat!!!

its on 88k and so far only really had wheel bearings and usual services so been good up to now. apart from the sunroof which leaks and they can't sell the seals seperate so only option is a new £700 sunroof
