Ok I'm on the look out for a low(ish) millage Astra SRI 06 onwards so Astra H I believe, I'm stuck between the 1.9 CDTI 150 or the 1.8 VVTI now the cars price wise are near identical on the 2nd hand market so I'm stuck between what todo.

I originally wanted the diesel as there bloody good on fuel and map very well for some fun now and then, being a bit put off by stories of the gear box ect

Now I've been looking into the 1.8 as there still quickish and I assume dont have the same problems with gear boxes and petrol is obviously cheaper, I travel roughly 14,000 miles a year give or take

What would you choose engine wise and why, I can't decide

With that kind of mileage I'd go for the diesel.

diesel without a second thought! better mpg, better miles to the £ of fuel and all that torque plus with a remap it would be so much better to drive than a 1.8 petrol!

Yeah this is my thinking regarding the map, no brainwr considering more power and better MPG just wasn't sure if I'd benefit with the higher running costs but as you say better mpg to petrol will level out the fact diesel cost more. Just trying to find a low millage nice example now.

For any one in the no on these, what are the 'common' problems othe then the gear box to look out for.

Ready to buy providing the right one comes up and I stop switching between diesel and petrol

How is it quite hard?

I'd go for the diesel every time out of they choices, good engine, just buy a decent one and the gearbox will be fine.

Swirl flaps and egr valves are a big problem on the diesel... Ive got the 1.6 vvt on motorway miles returns 47 mpg and with a remap has made 143bhp. Try and go for 07 plus when they were facelifted aswell as going for the XP kit

Diesel without a doubt. The days of a petrol daily have long gone, just doesn't make sense now with how good modern diesels are.

The diesel is the far superior engine between those two.

Diesel out of those choices. Most definitely.

Warren does M32 Gearbox rebuilds for less than £400 IIRC, if in the event that you do suffer with the issue...

what is this box issue you's speak of??

my mate had the 1.7cdti (newest shape SRI) 60 reg when they first came out and that was back and forth to vauxhall for box issues, turned out to be a problem with the diff in the end, same boxes?
