What happened about those spitfires buried in sand in Burma? There's no recent news about them, I thought it would be really well documented?

I heard on the radio just before Christmas that he had been granted the rights to dig them up.

They really don't fuck about out there do they. But fair fucks to them if they thought they'd be fit to take a buried plane.

I can see this being a massive folly.

Dig up half of Burma, find 36 rotten wooden boxes containing nothing more than a pile of 70 year old rust and some faded RAF roundels.

Something like this - https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=miss+belvedere&hl=en&safe=off&client=safari&tbo=d&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=fDPoULKBEa6r0AX1pYGABA&ved=0CAcQ_AUoAQ&biw=320&bih=416#p=0

Surely the chances of actually finding them in decent nick is slim?

Don't ruin the excitement Robin, they will all be wearing chinos and fedoras, digging under moon light.

I do hope it's not just some delusional old war vet mistaking a dream he had in 1982 for reality.

It would be absolutely fantastic if they are there and they are salvageable, if they can get 20 flying, that's adding another 40% to the amount which can fly currently, that'd mean so many more people could see one in the air which can only be a good thing!

Amazing to think they build 20,000+ of them and only 47 can fly today!

An article I read in the telegraph about this when it first made it into the papers. David Cundall, who is the farmer who has done all the research believes they were prepared for storage by coating them in wax, followed by wrapping them in greased paper and then tarring any joints before being buried in their transportation cases. Burma is quite near the equator so who knows what condition they will be in. It would be remarkable if they are salvageable though.

Has anyone seen the similar story that has recently cropped up about rumoured spitfire burials in Birmingham too?

Cole, yes. Thing is though, it was never expected to Roy away when it was buried, same as these planes.

And that one was prob well restored, if not kept in perfect condition from after the war. Imagine how one that's been in a hole will fair, even if it is restored.
