A pilot and a nurse marry.

One day they are in a light aircraft together

They hit turbulence and he's knocked unconcious

His wife however manages to control and land the plane safely

How is this possible??

How is it possible that.....

1) .....a Pilot would marry a nurse (or vice versa)?
2) .....he gets knocked unconcious in a light aircraft?
3) ......a woman manages to fly/land a plane?

which of the above is your question?

Yep. Doing an online Equality and Diversity course and this was on a section about preconceptions.

I said that the wife was also a trained pilot. Never thought that she was THE pilot and he was the nurse.

I feel bad.

Its not perceptions is it, its stats.

Statistically most pilots are male and most nurses are female. I bet there's some wise ass smug twat who saw it coming and was like 'you're all so sexist/racist/any other ist/bad people' just because your assumptions are based on what is actually going on in the world.

Sure it would be nice to get that sort of thing as soon as you spot it, but missing something which is not borne out by any sort of factual situation is just because the world is giving you data, not because of any short comings in you as a person.

If you need to educate people about equality, you're already dealing with sexists and racists. Most training I went on for it was just designed to tell sexists and racists how to mask their actual feelings.

And I worked with sexists and racists who didn't actually change their day to day working lives, just didn't do anything that would get them in to trouble with the PC brigade.

I like to think i'm not sexist or racist etc but I have recruited staff in the past when working in hotels due to them "fitting the profile of the company" i.e they were female and hot.

My boss and I used to ask for pictures on CV's sometimes too

Shocking really!!

They are preconceptions though, even if it is backed up by statistical evidence.

I think what Ian is digging at is the common notion that preconceptions are always bad.

Which is why its OK to have them.

I think its good to go 'oh yeah, a female pilot' but I don't for one minute think it'll change anyone's day to day working life and that anyone who is inherently and deliberately sexist will just know what to say to get away with it.
