I'd imagine a member of the local constabulary or dvla employee would be the only people with access to that information. I'd also imagine handing out details to members of the public would not be in their best interests if they want to keep their job.

Are you sure?

I would have thought there would be data protection issues with just handing out other peoples details to anyone.

What if you saw an expensive car and wanted to find out where it was to nick it?

Just found this

quote:
"It is an offence under the Data Protection Act to obtain information under false pretences or for information to be used for any purpose other than that for which it was released. The Agency will refer any suspicious applications to the Information Commissioner for investigation and where appropriate prosecution."

I think that only applies if you are one of a number of companies registered with the DVLA to access such information. eg a parking company.

A general member of the public cannot, I believe

Thing is, if it's recorded on DVLA's files that you've requested it, if you're intentions are not for good then you'll inevitably be caught anyway.

People on CS can't trace a numberplate, but they can brass rub a VXR badge
