Apparently the wave triggered by an 8.0 magnitude reached 500 yards inland. For anyone else that been to the South Pacific, 500 yards is a lethal distance as most people live on the coastline.

Apparently they have canceled the warning and its only been minimal (but thats just what sky said)

If they know there is a possibility of one day a tsunami destroying everything they should move further inland.

I've been to several South Pacific islands, The reason they dont live inland is that most of the islands are only very small so there is no real 'inland'. The islands are generally only around 1 metre above sea level and the ones that I went to that are different totally have hugely mountainous interiors that simply arent habitable.

There's just no real escape unfortunately. These people have lived there for generations so its unlikely they'll simply move away. When I visited an island called Ha'apai, the previous year there was a big earthquake that lowered an existing causeway between two islands by a metre.

well, fair enough, if they have lived there for generations then they obviously accepted their fate years ago..
