So lets hear the Morning Thread consensus on this one:

I sit in the same building as one of our sales teams. Today it's come to light that the branch management has decided to invest in a piece of software that basically monitors everything the sales team does.
This is phone calls, appointments made, sales statistics and even goes as far as placing a GPS in each car to monitor the time spent on the roads and at each client.

Now, the sales team is furious and takes this as a token of mistrust.

Management argues that it's a tool to help everybody do better and help improve the workflow of the individual.

What do you think? Is it going to far?

I know who I'm inclined to side with...

Morning

Morph - I wouldn't have thought it'd be different, but probably best to check on vvoc anyway

Ball boy - While I agree it does show mistrust from the management which can be rather irritating, you only need to worry if you've got something to hide imo.

Balling we had similar wanting to install trackers in site based cars and not office based staff.

It kicked off still in dispute I believe as someone supposedly played the race card being one of the first to be informed of his tracker.

I'm of the opinion if you do your job and have nothing to hide why should you be bothered how they monitor you?!

Sometimes you'll take from the company, but then give back out of hours etc.

See, this is kind of my logic.

Ad to that the fact that we have to work ever harder to make money and need to improve everywhere we can.

I think if we were running a production company, no one would think twice about management monitoring the production workers, to make sure everything runs as smoothly and effectively as possible.
Because the sales reps are used to be completely in charge of their own time, they're kicking up over the fact they feel somebody is breathing down their neck.

In the end, if they do find out somebody is slacking or doing his job ineffectively it could help save the company, make progress and ultimately secure a better pay for everybody.

God knows I'd work harder if I knew I was being monitored.
