What are these like to drive? e.g mpg, driveability etc. reason I'm asking is because I am thinking of getting one to use as a daily to drive to and from Uni each day (about hour and a half each way), and I need something that is cheap as chips but also economical. which engines are the best/most reliable? Any information or personal experiences will be most appreciated

Great engines, get the 1.5TD. My wife ran one for about a year, you could get a easy 500 miles from the tank with Motorway miles, and normal driving.

Also consider the MK3 Astra with a 1.7td.

I have been looking at the 1.5TD tbh, reckon it's worth holding out for the turbo over the non turbo? It's just the non turbo ones seem to be cheaper for some reason

Mate of mine has a 1.5TD as a daily. Really good going car, quicker than I was expecting, quicker than a 1.7TD Corsa C.
He comes on here the odd time so might be able to tell you more about MPG etc

I'd be looking out for a Corsa C 1.7DTi if your budget allowed.

Corsa c would be ideal, but only looking to spend about 350-500 quid as it'll only be for a year. 1.5TD seems to be the one to go for

I had my L reg Corsa 1.5D for 4 years, sold it in September last year.
It had 225,000 miles on when I sold it, after I put over 100,000 on it.
NEVER went wrong, in 4 years I spent about £300 on maintenance, including tyres, brakes and servicing. That is it!
Sitting at 65mph, I would get 70mpg, a bit slower and I would get over 80mpg.

I find those MPG figures a bit rich, I'd expect around 50mpg...
I get those figures from a modern common rail diesel's, an old mechanical izuzu lump won't get the same.

Yeah didn't you know, Isuzu lost the instructions to build that engine and all of the manufacturers have spent the last 20 years making diesel engines just as economical..

My brother had one, was ace 
Paid about 150 for it as a non-runner, fixed a split coolant hose and it was fine

Yeah I think it's going to be a 1.5td tbh, 50mpg will be spot on as well, anythings gonna be more economical than my other corsa at the minute lol. Any common problems with these engines that are worth looking out for? Dodgy sensors etc.

Its a old mechanical engine, it has no sensors!
Engine will be the least of your worries, will run fine for 250k I'd say, if not more. Everything around the engine will fall apart first. I'd be most conserned about rust on the shell on a high mileage, old diesel.

I used to own one that i bought from here/ migweb that was running 17psi of boost, straight pipe and stripped out.
Went like the clappers and was super economical, so easy to up boost on these even someone like me who fails at anything mechanical was able to maintain it with ease

Those figures I said are spot on, and calculated the proper way, not by guessing.
I trip from Cornwall to the Peak District got me the 80mpg
Think about it, there is nothing electrical on them, nothing to drain power. If you take it easy, slip stream lorries it is easily do-able.

I've the 1.5TD and it's class, goes like clockwork. Only thing I've changed is a faulty alt. Put €20 of diesel in it weeks and weeks ago and it's still going and nowhere near the red. Deffo turn the turbo up on it tho, turbo lag in standard is horrendous!
