This story has been pedalling for the last few days but it'd be interesting to hear the views of CS....
quote: At least it appears that’s what happened with PyCon this week when a sexual joke led to some very public firings, a virulent debate about women in technology, another virulent debate about public shaming, and now, a DDOS attack.
http://techcrunch.com/2013/03/21/a-dongle-joke-that-spiraled-way-out-of-control/
In summary - a female (Adria Richards) didn't like a joke she overheard from two guys, created a ruckus on twitter which resulted in not only one of the guys losing their job but also her own after her employer was threatened by Anonymous (those pesky kids that create havoc on the internet).
This was completely blown out of propositions but i personally believe she is ultimately at blame due to the way she handled the situation. If she contacted PyCon staff directly then i suspect the two guys would have been asked to stop and/or apologise or to leave and i believe it would have ended there.
However, she decided to stick it up on twitter which just reeks of attention and reaction seeking to me
Apparently she has also been involved in similar situations - https://amandablumwords.wordpress.com/2013/03/21/3/

Maybe if she had been in the kitchen making drinks she wouldn't have heard it.

There's also talk of her potentially being able to take her ex-employer to court over unfair dismissal

people need to lighten up and accept that a joke is a joke .
why in this day an age people need to bitch about something that is said in a lighthearted manor and is meant to be funny ill never know.
glad she lost her job the miserable sod, shame for the bloke to be sacked though.

Lets just kill anyone with a twitter account that tweets more than 3 times a day. I think 3 times is about right.

Shock horror a women mouthing off in a workplace environment. Most women's attitudes stink in a place of work. Especially offices and especially towards men.

The whole thing is a farce. I think the Techcrunch journalist pretty much sums up my thoughts on the matter. Nobody is looking good in this.
The woman, Adria, definitely shouldn't have been publicly shaming anybody. If she felt offended by the joke she could have adressed the matter directly or made a public statement that didn't point fingers.
Playhaven should take better care of their employees and not fire anybody over such insignificant matters. It's the internet ffs, everything will be forgotten in a week.
Though we can't know if the guy was generally a fuck-up and had received prior warnings.
Anonymous are a bunch of fucking tossers who bully people in to acting according to their beliefs and they need to go to jail.
Like us, they have no way of knowing whether the fired employer had received prior warnings.
The firing of Adria seems the only reasonable action. For somebody in her position she majorly fucked up and has obviously lost all of her integrity.

To be fair, if that's a joke, they deserve to lose their jobs, it's not even funny.

Along the lines of stuffing a big dongle into a socket. She apparently also took offense to them talking about 'forking repos' which is a little ironic considering it's a technical term and i suspect with her being a developer she's forked repos in the past (no innuendo intended)

Agreed, international womens day ffs and here they have little commnuities and such like called 'aspire' where women can get together to help eachother get on in the workplace or take advantages of opportunites men don't have.
Isn't that the opposite of wanting equal rights.
