I've been meaning to do this for a long time as I'm a fat cunt and need to slim down again, so, after making a few quid on eBay the other day, I'm now looking for 2 mountain bikes, 1 for me, 1 for the wife.

I don't want something which is bottom end but I've only got £800 to spend on both, absolute maximum.

We went to Halfords the other day and although their bikes look alright, I'm just not sure about the quality of them?

Her brother has recommended Evans cycles and I've had a look and I quite like the look of the Fuji bikes they have but again, I don't know what they're like.

Any pointers?

Tweek Cycles is good and has a decent sale on.

For £400 for each one, I would be looking at front suspension only.

I got a Scott Aspect 40 iirc last year for that price.
Very good bike, great quality and light.
Cube normally do nice bikes for around £400

I would personally go for a previous year's model. You can save a fortune and they are just as good a spec as the current years usually.

Evans usually have a good range of bikes from previous years.

As far as your bike goes I would reccomend the Voodoo Hoodoo from Halfords. Although it is £500 new you might pick up a bargain second hand!

I think halfords are selling off last years stock at the moment.

All I'm after is something which will deal with some light hilly riding, no epic downhills or anything, but something which doesn't fall apart after 2 months.

That Cube one looks alright, V-brakes though?

You will probably be better off with decent V brakes over a cheap and crappy disc brake. Be aware of your budget, far too many people buy cheap bikes with full suspension, disc brakes etc. which are a piece of shit.

I paid £700 for a canyon me mate paid £200 for a carerra Vulcan, we used to ride with lads with £3k+ bikes and there's nothing his couldn't do that mine could. For what your going to use it for just aim around £300 each, as above them decathlon bikes are good.

I'd look at a nearly new bike off Ebay. You can get one with a pretty high spec, a lot cheaper than even last years. Also trouble with buying new you might find after a few rides it's not for you, and loose interest and loose a big wedged of money on it.

Google Paul's cycles.

Have a look there, they are heavily discounted end of line bikes. Not of if anything is in your price range though.
But worth a look.

I do, a couple of members on here have bought from us in the past.

www.ukbikesdepot.com

2013 bikes have 15% off with codes, we have older model years and also have ex-display stuff that comes with the full warranty of a new bike but have been sat on a couple of times.

Who assembles your bikes podgeworth? I have to say that whoever put my bike together did a fucking shoddy job of it. The brake calliper bolts were done up finger tight, the callipers were rubbing the disk, the gears were barely indexed and a whole host of other things weren't quite right

Sorry about that, its the guys in the workshop. Glad I found out about that as this is obviously an issue that needs addressing and it will be addressed as its not on, seems like some bikes were being rushed out when you got yours. If you get in touch to my work email (nathan@ukbikesdepot.com) I can sort something out for you as a goodwill gesture.
