Hello all, kind of very new here. Anyhow, I picked up a 1.4 automatic Corsa back in March for £10 (Yes, £10) which is in a pretty poor shape:

Fairly low miles too

It'll still pass an MOT.. Just.

Got some things to fix, mainly the tracking is out, the cam cover gasket has gone, and is leaking oil all over the engine, and the high idle temperature:

Next week I'm tearing the cam cover off, redoing the gasket and might respray the cover while I'm there, this is my first car and the first car I've ever worked on, so if I'm doing something entirely stupid at some stage, don't hesitate to tell me

It was my grandad's old one, he got a new car and he was going to scrap that one, so I offered him £10 for it as a joke... And he took it

I need to get it up to scratch before its next MOT in October, plus I'm going to modify it a little on the way I think, my red HT leads should be here soon

Bit of rust on the doors and some car park dings, but the chassis is absolutely sound, no rust anywhere, only letdown for me at the minute it the broken kickdown switch, but I'm debating whether to convert it to manual or not...

Here's a few more from my outing in it today, found the high temperature problem to be a failed fan sensor, so I did a quick fix until I can get myself a new one:

Means the fan is on all the time, but at least it isn't overheating any more

I also need to get the rocker/cam cover gasket looked at, there's a lot of oil by the bottom right screw:

The engine needs a good clean, I know. So does the rest of the car...

I encountered 2 interesting issues today, one with the rear wash wipe, which decided to empty its contents into the boot of the car, took the cover off to check the pipe and found this:

That's all that's left of my washer pipe, interesting to say the least.
The second problem was that my car wouldn't come out of Park for 15 minutes, lol.

Seriously, I was stuck in a parking space for 15 minutes, I think the gearbox needs some new oil.

I did a quick check under the boot floor for some rust, just based on the fact that half my washer pipe is missing, and thankfully there's nothing:

Seems to be a pretty solid car, right now I'm waiting for the WD40 to work its magic so I can take the grille off, I'm either replacing it or spraying it, not sure yet.

EDIT: Grille done

I need to paint up the grille, which is in my house at the minute, but I really like it without, but for obvious reasons, I need one.

I will do, I've been looking at an Irmscher grille without the logo on it that looks nice.
I've also just ordered an FK strut brace for it, and I'm going to pick up the new gasket for the cam cover next Tuesday.
Tomorrow I'm changing the offside tyre because it's bald, and then while it's on the axle stands I'm going to spray the wheels white to see how they come out, if it looks bad, I might stick a set of Tigra wheels on it.

I should have defined poor shape it's full of dings and scratches, it's nothing I can't remove but yeah, as far as rust goes, there's little to none, and it's pretty solid.

As for my plans: Yes, I have a lot, first of all I need to get it sort of roadworthy again, so I'm replacing the bald tyre tomorrow, I'll get the tracking done professionally as I have no idea what I'm doing... I'll change the gasket next Tuesday when I go and pick up the part, and I'll change the fan sensor when I've got a spare day

For the mods:
I have to be careful for insurance purposes, I mean I'm already paying £4000 a year for it, which is 12.5x the value of the car. (I live in that bit of Birmingham that's a really high insurance risk, otherwise known as B23, and/or all of it. And I'm 18, so yeah).
So things the insurance won't check - Racing cams possibly, one of those K&N filters that fit in the slot where the old one went, GSi spoiler, slightly lowered, but not slammed, leather interior, not sure if I want the Calibra or the Corsa one yet though, I may get some depo lights too. I've ordered an FK strut brace for it already, and when I change the cam cover gasket I'll be repainting the cover and generally tidying the car up a little. Colour coded mirrors are also a must, as are Tigra alloys which I may have grey or black, not sure yet.

I would too mate, but you have to start somewhere I guess

I may try some specialist insurers as I've not actually got any insurance yet, just 4k was the lowest quote.

Speaking of my car though, another update from earlier that I forgot to upload, not really integral to anything but I managed to get the radio to (sort of) work:

Quick update: No photos today because I'm on my phone, I'll add more tomorrow.

Spent most of the day cleaning the interior of the car, which is now nice and clean, unfortunately, my battery went flat while I was using the little 12v hoover + the radio, and my jump leads appear to be broken, and I can't get the car out of Park, so it's stuck in my car park until further notice

Update for everyone, not anything particularly interesting but I managed to get a "New" (I use this term loosely) stereo for the car.

By new, I mean I found it in my cupboard and it's a stereo my dad used to have in his old Rover 216GTi back in 1996, but I think it fits the car a lot better than the old one and it has a 6-CD changer too. Also the old one wasn't working properly, all I could do was listen to the CD or the AUX.

I don't have a shot of it in the car because my camera battery went flat, will have to get one for Sunday.
Oh, and I sprayed one of the steel wheels white, I've got to put it back in the car to see how it looks, I'm thinking that and red mudflaps and I could have some sort of rally look going on.

Update time!
The bad news:
The overheating has gotten so bad that I can't drive the car without the heater on, and even then I can only drive it for 10 minutes or so at a time, I need to get this looked at
The worse news:
The car is making a grinding noise when I turn the engine over, which isn't ever good.

Now for the good news, finally fitting all my broken dash LEDs tomorrow as none of the ones in the centre console worked, went for some green ones as I'm yet to see a Corsa with them, will update with a photo when they're done

Update and question for anyone who knows:
First the update, heater controls have been taken off so I'll be fitting the LEDs soon, I'm in bed with flu now but when I'm better, it'll be fitted.
Now for my question, am I the only person with an automatic Corsa on here? Just curious.
