Can anybody name some more nice chain hotels along the lines of Malmaison and Macdonald? Need some inspiration.

Think offer on at moment at Village... Bed breakfast and evening meal for £50-£60ish and all have gym / pool etc.

De Vere are the nicer locations but Village are just as good.

I didn't rate Village by DeVere and the DeVere main group is clearly having financial difficulties given the state of some of their flagship hotels!!

I'd say Von Essen but, well they've gone now

I rate Best Western now, afaik, each hotel is still independently owned which gives them a bit more freedom than a chain owned hotel.

Look at the hotels which are selected for entry into the Relais & Chateau guide
