White smoke is also over fuelling, so faulty injector/s, low compression, lack of air
Is eml on?

Doesn't sound like the turbo, if it was the turbo it would be running rough and plooooming out Blacky blue smoke.
As for the over fuelling thing... Usually when it's over fueling it's black smoke. White smoke says water to me. Sounds daft but have you kicked its plumbs in recently? All of my taxis just get driven round about town and some to the airports. So they fill up with shite and start to smoke. So when they go for a service I go kick there plumbs in down the bypass and the shite that comes out is unreal! Then It stays clean and un-smokey for a few months.
Does it just get used to pootle to the shops and to work or is it getting used hard or for long distance?

During the week the mrs pootles round town and school. I drive it twice a week and give it a bit. Once a week it gets a 60 mile round trip on the motorway

FROM AA WEBSITE
We're seeing some evidence of DPF systems failing to regenerate even on cars used mainly on motorways.
On cars with a very high sixth gear the engine revs may be too low to generate sufficient exhaust temperature for regeneration. Occasional harder driving in lower gears should be sufficient to burn off the soot in such cases.
DPF regeneration will be initiated by the ECU every 300 miles or so depending on vehicle use and will take 5 to 10 minutes to complete. You shouldn't notice anything other than perhaps a puff of white smoke from the exhaust when the process is completed.
There's no evidence in AA breakdown data that the problem's going away – newer car models seem just as likely to suffer DPF problems if not driven 'correctly' as those built when DPF's were introduced.

Seen this on another PD when everyone said it should be blue. Couldn't see for miles behind until we got it home.

If its turbo. It will be blue smoke. Not white.
White is water or excessive fuel.
If its white and only doing under load. I'd look at injection pump and injectors.

Maybe it was coincedence the turbo went at the same time, just the white smoke disguised the black.

I think the DPF was trying to do a regenerate thingy as it sticks some diesel into it and then it burns the shit out, but as we were just pootling home it was not going fast enough to work and thats where the smoke came from...
Just given it a good smashing and its seems fine!

It will have been doing a DPF regeneration, it can happen whenever the conditions are met! Doesn't always have to be motorway journeys

I heard putting them under load can sort it? Ie 2k revs in 4th on a hill and full throttle to get the exhaust temps up?
