This week I had to replace the rear tyres on my 5 series so I had the ATS guy who does our Van tyres change them for £20 whilst I was out working, I get a call mid afternoon saying they had to take the wheels to their depot because the machine in their van wasn't strong enough to take the tyres off, then a couple of hours later they tell me that one of my wheels has a crack in it and it isn't retaining air and that it looked prexising ( It wasn't).
So I give him the benefit of the doubt and buy another Mv2 off ebay and get the tyre off the broken wheel and put it on the new one, but whilst doing this we notice the other wheel has gone down now too and that it similarly has developed a hairline crack which is pissing air out of it, after inspecting the 1st one though which has had the tyre taken off it has a fair bit of grazing as if something has impacted it where the crack has appeared however the tyre guy is insisting that BMW wheels are renowned for it and that at most his tyre machine may have exhaggerated it but didn't cause it, what options do I have?
Luckily i bought 1 replacement wheel for £40 and I found a company which can repair them for £48, I don't have a spare and I have a 3000 mile trip next week so need a resolution quickly.

i had my bmw wheels refurbed recently (MV3) i think they are? and i had to have one welded as it was cracked, my mate had exactly the same thing a bit later, it is most certainly a common issue however whether thats the cause in this case i dont think you will ever know for certain.
if it was me i would give them the benefit of the doubt and take it on the chin

mv3's are terrible for cracking.
I doubt the fitter cracked the wheel

Fair enough if it is a common issue, I guess I'll just have to take it on the chin then, luckily should only set me back £150 and I'll have a spare wheel now I suppose, coulda been worse. it just seemed a bit suspect.

If it's only a hairline crack get it tig'd and re-use the wheel
Wont do any harm to have a couple of spares.

As said it's a common problem, I've had one crack on me when fitting a tyre. Run flats don't help either, takes a LOT of force to break the bead.

Most BMW alloys are known for cracking so I doubt it was the tyre fitter.

I see how people commenting here say they cracked when fitting tyres...
They didn't, they cracked when you hit a pothole, it was notices when the tyres were fitted..

I remember when it was really common years ago being in the carpark at the back of my local bmw dealers and there was skips full of wheel that where either cracked or suspected of being cracked

There is an issue with these wheels as I no someone this happened too. BMW replaced them under warranty as their is a superceeded part number

Well the tyres were both actually inflated before changing the tyres, they weren't afterwards.

If you can see grazing and the cracks start from there, get photos etc and kick off with HO. Local branch won't do bugger all.

The mv4 wheels crack with runflats, they were the ones on watchdog
Mv2 and 3 a lot less prone, ive had loads of sets of each

I'm sure it's only the mv4's that are prone!! 2's and 1's are normally fine! I'd be kicking off at their head office. Also depends where the crack is.. If its somewhere on the edge where the tyre machine would have been in contact you have a point.. If its in the middle you probably caused it hitting potholes.
