Will be in York on my wife's birthday, so want to find somewhere a bit special.

Usually use viamichelin.com, but it only recommends places outside of York.

Would love to try Black Swan at Oldstead, the nearest Michelin starred restaurant, but it's a bit far out and we'll not want to be driving.

Budget limit is around £120 per person, excluding drinks, which seems easily achievable, looking at few places.

Prefer some place with a tasting menu opposed to a la carte.

Looking at the visityork homepage, D.C.H. and The Piano Bar stand out.

So, what do people suggest?

Jesus restaurants are cheap in York!

£29,95 for a three course meal!? You'd struggle to get one course for that over here, unless you're hungry for burgers...

That's not just York, you can do 3 courses for that money all over the country, if not cheaper.

Posh is not a prerequisite.

It just has to nice. Good food, good wine, good atmosphere. Don't want some place that seats 100 people.

Forget about the budget, I never thought to check restaurant prices and assumed they'd be somewhat similar to over here, which is pretty far from the truth, apparently.

I'd be amazed if any restaurants in this country were as pricey as that. Maybe in London.

There's one near me. Starts at £95 per person for Dinner. I'd recommend it to Balling but it's about 2 & a half hours from York and he said he doesn't want to drive

Can get rammed, especially on weekends when its full of touristy types. I dont make a habit of going in there because of that.

Whilst on the subject of York. What's the crack with The Golden Lion's claim of the best roof terrace in York or something along those lines? Went up for a look it's literally a box with high sides all around no view or anything

A friend of mine swears by the Blue Bicycle, but I've personally never tried it:

A bit more local to me, but a bit of a trip from York itself is The Peppered Pig:

That looks ideal!

Close to where we're staying as well, I think.

Let me know what you think of it, if your opinions line up with my friends' - you won't be disappointed.

I must give it a try at somepoint.
