Lookin for an E46 330D coupe in the next couple weeks before i go back to work but finding a manual is proving hard...not many around what so ever with the mileage im wanting.

There seems to be a lot more choice of the steptronic versions around, just wondering what they are like to live with? If you google for SMG all you get is horror stories, wondering if the steptronic uses anything like the mechanisms that go wrong in smg?

or should i just get a manual

SMG is a manual gearbox with a mechanism which sits on the outside and changes gears.

Steptronic is a proper torque converter auto box.

What year car will it be? The auto boxes don't have a massive torque rating, something like 250lbft for the early ones and 310 for the later models.

If you remap a 330d you'll have 330 or 350lb/ft so they're on the ragged edge by then.

I had step tropic on my 330ci. Used it about 3 times! Just left it in auto or Sport mode!
It's nothing like smg as robin said.

And you cant pin it in gear. It knocks up for you when you redline it which is a little annoying when your mid sideways action.
Kickdown put me in 2nd at nearly 70mph once, shit myself!

As a box in general i loved it. If i was to have another E46 it'd have to be auto.

My 330Ci is steptronic, I use it a lot if I'm out for a 'drive' but mostly it's in either D or Sports.

Its basicly an auto but you knock the lever to the left to go into sport but you can shift up and down but knocking the lever up and down like in DSG.

A bit pointless as it wont let you shift unless your over/under a certian RPM

Why would you want to try and pull away from standstill in 2nd though or try
to downshift at the redline

Yeah thought it would be that, got it on mine as you've mentioned. I've called it easy-tronic/tip-tronic.

Obviously you don't, but i felt it wouldn't let you really drive it hard.
