Found this by chance more than anything, Thread on the Clio forum, PMed and made a 65mile trip Friday night to view it, before going back Sunday to collect. Didn't plan to, but ended up towing it home using my DCi....

Next morning, First time I had properly seen the car in the daylight. Its very clean for the miles and age, Including full service history and the spare key.

The reason we had to tow it back, Believed to be shreaded cambelt... Quick before picture...

Easy bits removed

This don't look good....

More stuff removed to help me gain access...

I have since got the head off (Pics tomorrow), 14 Bent valves, few broken rockers and found the cause of it all...

The above is one rib from the Aux belt, clearly made its way into the timing belt covers and caused the belt to slip, theres no broken teeth or anything on the cambelt, This is why its so important to have the aux belt changed when it should be done, and by somebody who knows what their doing, as I think its been destroyed due to the A/C compressor having 6 ribs, and the belt being put on the wrong 5 ribs.

More tomorrow.

Another nice Clio. What's the plan? Fix it up and sell it on?

MG's are notorious for that, aux belt snaps and wraps round the bottom pulley causing the belt to slip. Cool car you got though, for keeps or money earner?

Lovely colour that!! Would prefer to have that over my liquid yellow one! Guessing it was really cheap due to the belt issue?

Plan is to fix it, Drive it for a couple of weeks, then sell to my mate, Hes fallen in love with it.

These Clio's are notorious for it too, mostly by, as per this, people fitting the Aux belt incorrectly on the aircon compressor.

Edges, I prefer LY! And reasonably cheap, Cost me £475, but it is bloody mint otherwise!

Are you replacing with standard 2 piece valves or upgrading to 1 piece? If you prefer LY... Part ex??

Keeping standards, If I were to keep it, I'd go all out on it, but as I'm selling it (to my mate), I'm only doing some minor power upgrades, 182 exhaust manifold, possibily 197 cams if I can talk him into them too.

What is needed to run 197 cams in the 182 head Alex?

Need to set the timing differently, that's it really, it will need a remap, as it will run lumpy at idle and possibly be a bit lean.

Do you know the degree difference you have to run with them Alex? There's a specialist around London that did all the research and keeping everything secret!

I don't, but I know somebody with the tool to do it (a bent standard horseshoe)

Theres a few people that know about it now, its not as well known as say a XE cam in a LET engine, but its not 20 years old either lol.

BIG update

First up, rebuild head. 16 new valves, skimmed, 6 new rockers, new valve stem seals, decoked and valves lapped in. Lifters drained too.

Block face cleaned up, pistons decoked etc.

Quality Payne gasket

Then a expensive box from Renault Wolvo appeared, this meant I could crack on with some more...

Like getting it all back together, timing done (With correct tools!)

Genuine plugs..

Really cracking on with it now

Few more bits..

Then completed! (Rail guard fitted 2mins after this pic!)

First start video too...

It ran a lot better after this vid, idled properly, revved properly and stopped tapping (that would have been due to no oil in lifters/Dephaser)

Took it for a drive, mostly okay, needs a couple of little bits..

Then took it for a mini photo shoot with Paris Peach, the 172 being driven by its new owner

Some of the pics are piss poor, camera can't deal with no light at all

Suits little Terry

Its now left my drive, With its new owner (Terry), and will be back for more stuff as per usual with the fleet of Clio's I care of!

I can confirm a K-tec Stealth sounds good too.

Will keep this thread up to date with progress since there is still more to come, and Terry already has plans!
