My knowledge of tv's is very limitated and I truly have know idea what it is I am looking for specs wise.

I have around the 500 mark to find a new tv and would like it to be preferable bigger than 32 inc.

It will be purely used for gaming and the odd bit of tv.

Any help would be muchly appreciated

good budget for what you want, plenty of decent 42-47 Smart units at that price, for me personally i would look at a smart LED , non 3D and you will get a nice one.
