Been having a notion for a while now to get a clio 172/182 but this week a ep3 type r has caught my eye, an older bloke a couple of streets down is selling it.

How does it compare to the clio driving wise, just as much fun? Also any major faults/ know weak spots with them? Presume being Japanese they're fairy bombproof.

Seller is looking for £2600 for it , 03 plate, silver, 60k , fsh. This sound about right? Looks mega clean and std. bar a magnex 6x4 oval - which sounds the business if I'm honest

Clio 182 is a lot more fun to drive but the ep3 has the better engine.

Also 40mpg was easy in my clio however I could never get my type r above 30 mpg even driving like a granny.

These cars love/have to be driven hard to get the most out of them.

The major problems I know about are creaky steering racks and crunching gearboxes, both are expensive fixes. Also they eat oil for fun so make sure its been changed regular.

The facelift model (04 onwards I think) don't suffer the gearbox and steering rack issues that the earlier ones did

Exactly. Never understand why people say that. And what exactly do you look for when looking for signs of thrashing?

It's a 50/50 this one I guess. I've owned a 182 and borrowed a mates type r for a week. My clio had 80k. Mates type r had 165k. Apart from it crunching into 3rd the civic was nice. Comfy and better driving position than clio. If your quite tall the clio seats are shit unless you have the recaros.

Clio is cheaper, cheaper to fix, more fun and better on fuel.
Civic is faster, comfier and better built.

I'd go for a civic if it was me, just cause of the fact I've had a 182.

i loved my pre-facelift CTR! black one with magnex exhaust, light tints, vtec controller, strut brace and maybe some new wheels and they look the absolute nuts!

That's neglect of the car itself, not signs of it being thrashed. I had a catback mongoose and lowering springs on my type R and it was driven hard near enough everyday but it looked and sounded amazing.

I'd say, statistically, if you drive your car like a cunt, you're more likely to have damaged rims than someone that doesn't yes.

How'd you work that out lol. Damaged wheels are either done by kerbing when parking or hitting potholes. Not driving fast.

I've kerbed a wheel driving like a tosser before when I thought my 1.2 nova was a Lambo, i'd be amazed if I was the only person ever to have a kerbed a wheel driving like a twat thinking i'm the stig.

In my own opinion, the list I made would be signs of a thrashed car, regardless of what anyone else thinks, these are things i'd be looking for.

I apologise to anyone who disagrees, but I'm not going to try and justify my reasons all fucking night

Don't understand people saying EP3's are quicker.. My 182 is quite obviously quicker than my mates EP3. Plus my XE corsa was much quicker than many type r's and my clio is quicker than that was :/

I'm not trying to be that annoying twat that thinks his 1.2 is a Lambo but just saying what I've noticed when driving on the track/drag strip. Also I find driving a type r very dull.. My opinion of course

I've never found 182's to be particularly quick in a straight line. The older 172's were faster! But I had more hassle from EP3's than Cliosports in my old EF Civic.
