Got a new job with a 100 mile round trip everyday so need to get a new motor.
Don't want anything with more than 60k miles and must be diesel for obvious reasons.
Was thinking a golf, for that money it would be a bogo 2007 model with 60k miles but whilst looking I noticed you can pick up an insignia that's two years newer and 20k less miles for the same price with a few extras like cruise control, sat nav, half leather etc. must be a reason they're so cheap though?  anything I've missed?

I quite like the idea of it being comfortable if I'm spending 2-3 hours a day in there and big usually = more comfortable. Won't be all motorway so would be good to have a bit of go to get past the 30mph'ers on the back roads.
Insignia actually looks quite nice inside, well nicer than the outside and some apparently return 70+ mpg and free tax(not sure if they're the ones in my price range though, so many different engines).
Have looked at the corsas though, 1.3 over the 1.7?

Haven't driven a lower powered Insignia but the 160 diesels are good cars and would be perfect for what you're wanting from it. It's comfortable and quiet on the motorway.

The Insiginas is your price range wont be free tax. the Ecoflex model are £105 a year tax and the normal 160 cdti are £175 a year.
Test drive one first and make sure your happy with the ride, its quite bumpy for a big bus.

Will that depend on the wheels/tyres though or is it the suspension? That said I'll probably want one with alloys.

I agree with the bigger is better comment, just don't expect to get 70 to the gallon out of any diesel in the real world.

Can't see much difference between the trim levels, ie. the SRi is £500-1000 more expensive but looks to have nothing additional over say this SE...

Still too much stigma attached IMO (with Skoda) 
Have the reliability of Ford's improved? My last dealings with them are the Mrs and Sisters StreetKA's a few years back, both suffered from snapped suspension springs, corroded ARB's, shoddy bushes, lots of knocking and rattling.
