Used to own one of these and fancied adding it to my retro console collection, working ones fetch decent money though 30-50 quid! so I purchased a broken one for 10 quid and repaired it.

The process is called recapping, and its replacing all the capacitors for new ones.
The problem, dim, screen, can barely make anything out no matter how you adjust the brightness

Replacement capacitor next to one of the originals

10 in all the replace

Old ones

As good as new now

Just bunged Sonic on, I used to spend hours on this game as a kid, pretty amazing how Iv not probably touched this game for about 15-18 years yet I pick it up and it instantly comes back to me, where the lives and the hidden rooms are, everything

Brilliant Steve. I'm beginning to mess with some basic electronics to try and get my soldering better. This looks fiddly to say the least.
Needs a bit of a clean/sand tho!

I loved my Game Gear. Had a TV tuner for it, that was awesome.

Still got mine with about 8 games and the hard carry case
Every time I dig it out and play it I end up wondering why I'm bothering when I have an xbox and a smart phone.
Going to get it out today now
