After years of umming and arring, I've been for a couple of consultations about getting my teeth straightened. I've chosen a new dental practice and dental surgeon and I'm going for my impressions and scans on 11th March to have InvisAlign braces made; should take 4-5 weeks after that to get started with the first brace.

It's going to cost between £2700 and £3500 depending on whether I have to have InvisAlign light or full depending on the number of braces needed to get to the end result and then £300 after for 3 retainers that I have to wear at night once they're in position.

Has anyone had this done or got any tips? All I've heard is that it's uncomfy as he'll for the first few days of each brace and that I'll have a new set of braces every 2 weeks until they're in the final position.

I had normal braces as a teenager. Hurt like fuck when they got tightened. Also broke them everytime I ate a chicken wing.

my teeth are pretty straight now though, well worth it.

I got braces put in just before christmas and they are red.

They would have cost me 1600 but i was accepted on the nhs so they were 400 all in.

Your mouth gets used to them quickly, the worst part is when your teeth start to straighten the wire starts poking out the back and that rips the shit out the inside of your cheeks. Theres wax for that though.

Wish i got them years ago tbh.

InvisAlign are virtually unnoticeable, clear plastic braces so no metal mouth or train tracks!

Nothing wrong with my actual teeth, they're just not straight so wouldn't really consider veneers.

I never understand this. Luckily I've been accepted to get my braces on the NHS but when I was looking into getting them privately, most people recoiled at the mention it would cost between 2-4k. It sounds a lot for "Just teeth" but it will make a huge huge difference to mine and probably Rich's life. Car enthusiasts would piss that away happily on mods and alterations to their pride and joy, when you really think about it. Or if someone smokes 20 fags a day, they're what £6-7 a time, there's between £2200 and £2500 a year! Without even thinking! Your teeth are with you for life and make a massive difference to your whole face and your confidence
(Can you tell I spent a long time trying to justify to myself, spending all that money? )

There's no operation, its just a series of braces. If feasible, I'll be having InvisAlign light which is 14 braces at 2 week intervals so 28 weeks; if I have full InvisAlign, its as many braces as required again at 2 week intervals.

I don't have any issues with my teeth and they're in good nick but I struggle to clean between my lower front teeth because they're so crowded; I do a good job but even the hygienist can't get floss between them so I have to use all kind of scales and probes and picks - My bathroom is like a dentists!

The main reason I'm having it done is actually to enable me to take even better care of them so as to avoid losing any as I get older. There's a guy at work who has lost almost all of his front teeth, one dropped out into his coffee last week and that sounds like a living nightmare to me.

The way I see it, these teeth have to last the next 70 years or so, I don't want a plate or implants or dentures so I'd rather spend out now than ultimately spend more in the future. Plus I'm quite self conscious about my teeth and I'll avoid looking directly at people when talking to them - ridiculously, my teeth aren't even that bad and very few people have noticed but I personally have confidence issues about them so to me, its worth every penny.

I'm 28 and had my braces fitted 4 months ago. I went for various consultations including InvisAlign, traditional etc. but in the end went for 6 month smiles. This treatment is great because like InvisAlign, they're white and clear so very discrete but the treatment only takes 6-7 months. Traditional braces take 18-24 months in adult teeth due to your mouth being fully developed so it takes longer for teeth to move. With 6 month smiles, they simply remove the crowded teeth to make more room for quicker movement.

My issue was mainly with my bottom arch which was severely crowded but after weighing up the options etc. I went for both arches. The cost should've been around £3200 but as I joined the practice dental plan (£17 per month) and paid in full, I got a good discount. Ended up paying £2700 for full treatment, 2x extractions, post treatment retainer and whitening.

The worst part about the whole thing was the extractions. Because the teeth were perfectly healthy, they took some serious tugging and lots of injections. Not a nice experience at all. Actually wearing the brace isn't all that bad. Like anything, it takes some getting used to with eating etc. The first month is uncomfortable and you do suffer with ulcers and sensitivity but it's a small price to pay really. I was lucky enough to use some cash from selling my Evo to get mine done because I hated them and was very self concious so if you can afford it, go for it man. Do some research because practices/online companies do offer some great deals. Good luck!

Had my fixed braces in over 18 months now, I love them, in fact I'd go as far as to say I'll miss them when they're gone and in no rush to have them off.

One thing I would say is definitely do you research, get on the brace forums, go and see a couple of specialists and make a properly informed decision about which one to go for.

My sister had invisalign, it took double the time they said and even the finished result isn't great. They're more for minor movement of only slightly misaligned teeth, they don't move the roots and so not suitable if you need extractions although a lot of places will tell you they are or that you don't need extractions when you really do.

Also, the hassle of having to take them out everytime you eat, brush and put them back in, keeping them clean etc is just a ballache, with fixed, you forget about them after a few weeks and you can be in comfort they're doing a 'proper job'. But then it all depends how much your teeth need to move.

Go to Stoke Orthodontics, they charge for a consultation but its worth it and the price comes off the treatment if you take it. They offer the full range so have no bias of one treatment over another. Will also do you interest free payments of as much as you like each time you visit.

ps. Yes it does hurt when you go each month to have the wire changed, especially when they start increasing the grade of the wire but it's good pain, like when you go the gym and you ache the next day, like it's doing some good

I've been to see three different dentists now; I was put off smile by the removal of teeth which I don't want to do when they're healthy. The dentist I met last night was much more amiable than the others I met, really switched on, nice person and gave lots of advice and pointers.

We're going to move my bottom pre-molars out a little bit and effectively shave a little bit off the sides of the front lower teeth to make enough room. Apparently, the first sets of braces move the teeth outward, out of position to allow the work to be done and the last sets of braces then move them back into the final position. InvisAlign issue a 3D stage by stage render as well showing the teeth moving from the start point to the end point brace by brace, so you get to see where the teeth will end up and get a good indication of the final aesthetic.

I actually had that when I was about 14, a retainer in the day which at night I had to attach a bracket to and sleep in head gear. I did it for about 12 months and was so pissed off that nothing seemed to be happening that I gave up on it. Wish I'd kept it up as I would have been just about due to have the train tracks fitted which would have saved me all this now!!

As A2H GO said, I was always put off by InvisAlign, Social6 etc. because they seem to be more for minor cosmetic adjustments? If you have severe crowding/crooked teeth, the only way forward is to have an actual appliance fitted which'll do all the hard work. It's big money and at our age, think hard about how successful you want it be.

Had metal ones when I was about 11-12, absolutely horrid experience, yes it straightened my teeth but by the time I was 17 they were crooked again. They tried to get me to have it done again before I turned 18 and it would cost but no way was I going through that pain again

Didn't see your post until now Ash. Apparently, I don't have a big overcrowding problem, even though I've convinced myself I do so it is relatively minor adjustments. The uppers are really only twisting a single tooth straight which already has room in which to fit. The lowers require the most work but last night's dentist thinks that I'm on the cusp of being InvisAlign Light which is 14 braces and under so effectively 28 weeks. Once the impressions are taken, I'll get to see renders of them at 14 braces and at more braces so I can decide how far I need to go and whether the extra £800 is worth it.
