Ever since fitting my XE last march Ive never been able to get 5th gear (could get it probably 1 time every 10-15 attempts the rest of the time it felt like I was trying to push the gearstick against solid metal and then eventually it just ended up in 3rd). After trying to realign the gear linkage and adjust the clutch cable and having no improvement i decided it must be and internal gearbox fault. I have now replaced the gearbox with a supposedly good one and I still have the same fault! Although its probably 1 time in every 3-5 attempts now. It seems more likely to get it the slower you go. I do have a gearbox spacer fitted and when the conversion was originally done i had the linkage cut and welded as you are supposed to.
Has anyone else had similar issue and if so how did you sort it?
Thanks.

Mine only seemed to struggle on the 2nd and 4th but we sorted that out by bending the linkage. I didn't run a spacer though.
Have you done as Generation says?
How have you aligned it? using the drill bit in the hole on the gearbox and the same on the gear stick then just bolted it up?

I have had a look under the car while my dad operated the gear stick and i couldn't see it hitting anywhere. Yes ive aligned it using the drill bit method a few times. Its just weird how sometimes it goes straight in and others its as if its a 4 speed box lol. Do you have to use the spacer then? I assumed you had to use that to get it to fit? i dont know if this could cause this fault but its interesting to know i might be able to remove it and see.
Thanks

I have the same problem, I had a f18 on my xe and could select all gears fine but the diff blew, so I put a f16cr on and now I cannot get 5th gear, the linkage is hitting on the steering rack. How did you sort it generation?

I had another look today from underneigth. I rekon if i take the spacer out itd move the hole engine n gearbox towards the drivers side which in my car the alt already rubs on the chassis so i rekon the spacer will have to stay. There is a bolt on the likage that is cloce to the steering rack and the linkage is close to the gearbox mount bolt but nothing touches. It works fine when the cars cold or not moving though so iys bound to clear whilst im under it. Ive took lots of pics to make it clearer ill put em on now.
