Mum turned the oven on and it instantly switched itself off again... no power on that outlet, or any others in the kitchen. Dining room outlet is dead too. Lighting however is working fine. Checked the circuit breakers, everything okay.

Took extension cable from the living room and started plugging things into it, noted that although the oven powers up (LED's on) the fan doesn't come on nor does it actually heat up. Everything else plugged into extension cable is working fine. Firstly, what could go on the oven to make that happen?

Secondly, how do I get the outlets back!? Presume it must have blown a fuse within it but I haven't really mucked around with mains, how would I go about checking this safely? I have a multimeter... thanks.

Sounds like its a split board and yourve taken out the rcd to lose sockets in several rooms.

Elements might have gone in the oven

This.
check the RCD, which may be sitting a little above middle position, you might have thought it was fully up on quick glance. I've noticed this a lot.

Lovely job! It was just ever so slightly lower than the rest, almost didn't bother trying it... but down and up and the sockets are back cheers.

Now can I install a new oven myself? I take it it's just plug and play for an electric one innit?

Generally yes. It'll probably just be a thick twin and earth cable from a spur point to the oven, unscrew the terminals on the back of the old oven to remove the cable and screw in on the new oven. Just be sure to do them up nice and tight.

Undo oven housing and check spade terminal hadn't burnt off the element and touched the casing . This would cause that fault and it's an easy fit

Can't picture what the back of an oven looks like now but I take it this is pretty obvious when taken out?

Was looking at new ovens (mum's not too bothered as she was planning to get a new kitchen done this year or next anyway) and I can see there seems to be quite a lot of confusion between 13A & 16A ovens... I might get stuck there!

does any part of the oven work, grill or oven or just light?
An element can be done yourself in 15 mins and only costs about £30.

The terminal connections typically look something like:

(I wont display the image because its huge), should be simple L / N / E

Nothing works, no fan, no heat, no grill... literally just the LED display!

Checked the terminals, everything looks fine.

Like I said, mum was looking at getting a new kitchen fitted anyway, so she has no qualms with buying a new one! Going to get a new hob whilst we're at it, old one is working but definitely seen it's day. Any recommendations? I'm quite partial to a Neff...
