Recently bought another sport and there seems to be a cooling issue. Temp climbs very quickly to over 100 degrees when stopped at lights and in traffic. The seller mentioned that the cooling fan was 'lazy'- not 100% sure what he means but when the temp gets near 100 I put the heater on full heat to draw some heat from the engine which seems to work ok, not ideal on a warm day tho. I know from previous sports that the cooling doesn't come on until about 102degrees but I haven't let it get that far to find out yet.
I removed the thermostat in the meantime in case it was stuck but the only difference is cooler running on the move and longer to heat up initially, same cooling properties as before in traffic.
I have replaced the coolant and removed the sound deadening mat from the underside of the bonnet to try to cool things down in the bay a bit but has anyone else any suggestions where to go next?
I know I can go down the route of changing the rad, cool running stat, fan switch with lower temp, oil cooler but surely the engine should be able to cool itself reasonably well?
Just to mention it is an air con one so I also considered removing the air con rad to let some more air in at the water rad.

Replace coolant with some fresh stuff, and make sure there's no air trapped.
Then run the engine and check the fan is kicking in.
Edit, just seen about coolant.
You need to check for any air trapped it shouldn't be getting hot THAT fast. You obviously have an issue, removing parts is just masking the issue

Ok, have checked and there is no air in the coolant system - seems to be working correctly but still running hot.
I suspected the eml bulb had been removed and on removal of the clocks there wasn't a bulb there. Unsurprisingly when the bulb was replaced the light came straight on and stayed on. I flashed the codes (engine not running) and got 1502/1503 (both immobilizer related probably due to the engine not running), 0340 which I think is camshaft position sensor and 1640 which is knock sensor/fuel consumption unit/ECU I think.
The car doesn't seem to use much fuel judging by other sports I have had and after removing the plugs, the electrode cap is bright white which would indicate running lean.
So if the engine is running lean then maybe the cooling system can't cope even if it is working to the best of its ability.
As the 1640 code suggests ECU fault I am going to swap the ECU for a known good one from another car and see if that helps out.
Any other suggestions people?

You bought a car that wasn't showing Eml light on ignition? Why would you do that?
May aswell start with known issues, providing they aren't old codes. Should wipe them first then go for a drive and check again
