This hasn't happened, but I have somebody coming later to
Collect an item that sold for £5 (I know) obviously not worried, but it go me thinking.


For example, if if sold an item for £200 and buyer wanted to collect but already paid via PayPal.

What happens if they collect, and then open a PayPal case? I have no proof they have received item at all, and surely they'd side with the buyer?

Write something up to prove they collected it, get their signature.

I've often thought the very same thing, and because of this in the past I've refused collection.

I'd love to know what PayPal would say about this....

You could always refund the money, tell them you don't mind PayPal, but then get them to gift the money once at your place collecting.

If it's paid as a gift they can't start a claim or get the money back. Simples.

Signature means nothing, I wouldn't know if it's genuine, and wouldn't prove anything to PayPal.

Least Royal Mail prove it go to that location and was signed for at their door.

I know how gift works, but most people would just naturally follow the eBay transaction and it would go as goods

Only issue with that is some buyers would feel in easy, and may nt even have a smart phone.

E.g if I sold a mobile, asked then to pay as gift then I blocked the phone

This happen to my brother, sort of. Guy paid by paypal and sent a "courier" to pick up the items.

Van turned up, collected alloys, got back, raised claim, got his money back

Brother got nowhere with paypal getting his money back. This was a few years ago mind.


Personally, collection = cash only. No exceptions

i bought a pair of levers for my bike on ebay,

they were 10mins down the road yet they insisted on me paying by paypal before i could collect, i explained numerous times i could rip them off but they didnt care,

sort of wish i had tbh.

My guess is they would side with the buyer and you'd lose the money.

Gift also not possible if its an Ebay auction, you don't get to choose the payment mode.

Possibly a criminal matter if there's intent to deprive.

In this situation the only real way to be safe would be to film it all. From the moment he knocks to the moment he leaves, I'd even follow him to the car and try and get a shot of him in the car with the item then driving away (try and get him to put item on front or back seats) avoid the boot if possible.

Doesn't have to be via the pay button on ebay? Just direct from PayPal to PayPal surely?

Wouldn't feel comfortable however in this situation I see it as being the only way of truly protecting yourself from any comebacks.

This exact situation happened to me selling some old subwoofers. 2 x 15" with enclosure build for Corsa.

Obviously too heavy to post so he collected. All got reversed and PayPal took the money from me.

Took me a year of writing letters to PayPal, debt collectors, etc to get it sorted.

I've had people collect stuff before on the condition they inspect the goods and leave feedback before they go.

PayPal protection isn't included when the item is Collection only.

If they collect it, they can't claim.
