Hi has anybody on here got a 1 series diesel? I've been thinking about get a 120d. I know cars can have some problems but I've been reading today about timing chains snapping on a few bmw models which have huge repair bills.

Has anybody on here got one?

Dad has one. 57 plate so is the face-lift of the original 1-series and has the better 2.0 engine. 173ps, something like that.

His has been spot on although only done 20k from new. He got an SE but with Dynamic package or something so has M-Sport suspension. He was chuffed going from M3 to this.

He did have a typical brake issue which used to be horrendously expensive to fix. It was never a recall because it was driver aid, but they brought out a recall fix and even dad got contribution from BMW for the fix.

Had 120d 07 plate from new and did 80k

Turbo went because of a faulty batch of actuators common in 2007

Apart from that fantastic car and never let me down

Facelift in 2007 face more power lower emissions and better interior

Options were expensive so getting high spec like xexons etc could be difficult

Also try and get 18s that were standard on the 130i as they look better

Chains were a problem up to 09 but still incidents happening today

Great cars

Probably looking at an 06/56. I was originally going to sell my a3 for something a bit cheaper but I've been thinking of selling my car and putting a small amount of money towards a 1 series m sport

I've always said 1 series are only ever driven by women or cunts.

I have a 120d, it's less than a year old so obviously no long term reliability reports but it's just a very good car. Different to an Audi, everything feels a bit sharper somehow, more direct steering and gear changes, Audi still have better interiors but the BMW is hardly Peugeot standard.

I had an older shape 116d for a few weeks while this was on order and that was still pretty good, arguably looked better too but the newer shape is a better drive, even ignoring the extra power.

Friends Mrs has a 120d of around the age you are looking at.

Goes well, but hardly sees above 40mpg, even on a run.

I often use a 118d from Dad's work when I can be bothered to go and get it, it's a nice car but I wouldn't buy one.

I have 2012 a 123D coupe and its been faultless (apart from the cunt that ran in me before it was a year old), pretty decent mpg as well and I'm never really taking it steady.

I had an 120 se on a 05 plate never went wrong in 3 years and 105k, then a 58 plate 120d m -sport which wasn't as fun on long trips with the big wheels run flats and suspension. which i would bare in mind. Then went to a a3 sline on a 12 plate which was rubbish to drive compared to the bmw although this did have the the 136bhp stop start engine so not surprised it felt slow. Back in a Bmw 320d business which is even better than the 1 series due to smaller wheels and no m sport suspension

yes 177 is the N47 which is shared with the 143BHP 118D and the 204BHP 123D

I did 80k in a N47 120d and 90k in a 318D N47 with no issues on chains

Its not that common - about 5% but need to be aware of it
