Im about to (hopefully) buy a van with to use as spares on my current campervan.
The only hurdle is the fact I need to get it 56 miles back to my place.
It has MOT left so my current A plan is to get a 1 day insurance policy (under my current insurer) for it. Tax it via direct Debit method (if the DVLA pick up that its insured for a day). Then drive it home and cancel the Tax.
Does anyone have any other way they would do it? Will the above way work?

Hire a recovery truck. Or a trailer if you've got a car that will pull it. Or just pay someone to recover it. Don't think you will be able to tax it on day insurance but could be worth a try

Hire a transporter/recovery van thing? Like a transit/doblo with a flat bed back and a winch etc.
They are available from the van hire things round here quite reasonably.

The van is a 3.5ton hi-top - can they carry something like that?

Would have to be pretty big. I would imagine you would need a 7 tonner license to drive it.
Two options if it was me.
Pay someone to recover it
Insure it and risk getting nicked with it having no tax

When did you pass your test? On my license, it says I can only drive up to 3500kg max payload iirc, so towing that would be a no go.

Think you would have to be 40/50 to have passed your test in the time when you could drive a wagon that size on a car licence

Where a good place to arrange a recovery like that?
Whats the repercussions of having no tax these days.. fine?

What exactly. Is the van? If it has mot, honestly I'd day insure.com it and not bother with the tax. Just make sure the mgw is 3500 or less.

It will be registered sorned so try avoid motorways or places you will run into anpr cameras if you can.
I think it's points actually! And a fine.
Although if you drive with no mot or no seatbelt it's a £30 fine and no points. Makes sense..

As for hiring recovery.. This might not work but worth a try. Bit of blagging involved here.
Take out car breakdown cover the type that can get you and the car home if you break down within such a distance from your home.
Go to collect the van drive it out onto the street. Remove the transponder chip from the key and ring the breakdown cover. He arrives you tell him you came out and the van just wouldn't start you know these vans quite well and you think it's a problem with the anti theft system you've had a look for yourself and don't think it can be fixed at the roadside so just hoping for the van to be recovered.
Fingers crossed they send a flatbed and your shaggin wagon will be on the drive outside your house that night.
Failing that Google recovery company's and ring them for a quote

Last time I insured a van for a day it was under £20. How much is tax £20? Add about £10 fuel so £50 all in?
Surley that has to be the cheapest method.
You also get it all day so can do something useful in it

Tax it online monthly then cancel, dont think tax check the mid when taxing cars as I've picked them up and driven them back with trade policy but taxed them while there. At most you'll pay for a months tax. Wouldn't risk driving with no tax or insurance at all not worth possible fines, impound fees and points for the sake of a few £££'s and a couple of phone calls.

Well you need to be 17 to drive so if he was 60 that would be 43 years ago at the latest when he taxed the van for £20

I am hoping to tax it and then cancel it for a refund. Only issue is if the tax picks up the temp insurance.
If not ill have to wing it for 50 miles.

As Gary said, you can't set it up DD if you're the new keeper. So you'd have to pay for 6 months, then lose a month + admin fees when you cancel it. You've then got the cost of fuel and the insurance. Won't be much cheaper than getting someone to shift it? Aren't there Facebook pages for jobs like this in your area? See folk fighting over jobs with undercutting prices all the time here.

Any sub-contract recovery firm that works for the likes of the AA would do private recovery.
When my Punto was shot, the garage couldn't fix it (and/or didn't want to fix it!) and said they'd get it to a Fiat dealership on my behalf.
Was £30 for recovery about 25 miles on a Transit flatbed type thing.
