Noticed it says only cars that produce 0 carbon will be free tax, does that mean a lot of cars that cost £20-30 at the moment will get charged at the £140 rate.

Do many cars produce no carbon at all?

This will get very interesting

Loads of people have bought 99 g/km cars due to the tax exemption. There'll be protest at Westminster and effegies burned at the stake.

Doesn't arse me my tax is extortionate anyway, should all be free imo unless they want to give us a £2000 yearly allowance for car repairs due to shit roads

It only applies to cars manufactured after 1st April 2017. Any cars built before that date will be taxed under current legislation

I possibly dreamt this, but I could have swore that the tax exempt cars were all bracketted that way with the proviso that it wouldn't be permenant, it was just an incentive to get some of the old guzzlers off the road or something.

That'll confuse the hell out of a lot of people

Much easier to scrap it and tax the fuel.

Then £0 rate for 99g/km was only to incentivise people to buy them. You'd be a fool to think it would last forever; EVs will eventually taxed and you'll have to pay to charge them up and park them as the uptake increases.

Only counts for vehicles registered after April 2017, so we'll be just fine

It's all bullshit. When I had a 1.6 106 GTi. It was the same price to tax as a 5.0 BMW M5!

I just forked out £500 for road tax. Also £280 for the van. I think it takes the piss how a 1.3cdti van costs the same as a 3ltr long wheel base van.

Last argument I had with someone on Facebook about it, he was claiming it would lead to far greater thefts of it. More difficult to steal road tax.

Needn't penalise anyone driving anything vaguely big, anything over 3500kg driven commercially needs to be separately licenced anyway, so they could be subsidised via that. With the added benefit that you'd incentivise sign-up to the O licence scheme. Which means heavy stuff is operated under stricter conditions which include more frequent checks.

Ditto coaches, buses, any PSV really. They're all listed so they can also be given dispensation.

Bit of a win-win that for me.

Can't say the same for anyone in a 3 series GT bombing up and down the M1 with a boot full of carpet samples. They're probably doing OK under the current regime.
