So I've recently purchased my first VW.. VAG group cars have never done anything for me in the past and I've always found them to be rather bland and soulless but I wanted a Campervan and I ended up buying a Transporter.
Buying the camper its self was a whole new adventure, it was like the people who own them know that I'm not "one of them" and as such they don't want to sell me their precious vehicle.. Not to mention that every single one is massively over-priced because the owners really do believe they are something special!
Anyway back to my observations:
* VW Van/Camper owners all like to think they are unique individuals but they all have the same modifications on their vehicles and they all do the same weird shit like hanging flowers from their wing mirrors (I saw vans with NO REAR WINDOWS where someone has gone to the trouble of fitting a rear-view mirror so they can HANG FUCKING FLOWERS!).. Then there's the gay as fuck stickers saying remotely witty phrases like 'Transporters Campers In Disguise" or "DUB".. idiots.
* They all want to be perceived as laid back and a bit 'hippyfied' but they are all extremely up-tight and arrogant to the point of believing parking their old builders van across two parking spaces to avoid the change of minor damage is socially acceptable action.
* They are magpies, if its silver, shiny and can be glued/stuck on to their van it will be.
* Not only do they love stickers on the outside they love to cover the inside of their vehicles with more shitty stickers and general wanky tat.
* Every single company that makes or distributes camper related products will tell you that theirs is the best and they clearly believe their own bullshit hype and then the next company you talk to will tell you the previous companies stuff is shite
* Talking of companies everyone has a 'mate' who runs a company that does something VW related who they'll still recommend even if they are a useless cunt and their products not worth a wank.
* People fit roof racks not because they are functional but because of the 'aesthetics' then tell you its 'retro' WHEN THE FUCK did a modern aero dynamic roof rack become a retro design icon? Pricks...

Interesting observations. I wonder what our other resident VW Transporter owner will make of this. Wanky tat is a great phrase

Your stereotyping an age group there. The t5 owners like that are usually 40+. I think they came over from the pt cruisers club. They make their cars look equally as shit.

I agree on most of that.
Not all of them. Some are alright, and may just have dodgy taste.
I hate the whole VDub thing now, shame as they are good vans etc. But so far overpriced, i.e T4s on ebay with 200k+ plus miles going for £2-3k is stupid.

Finally a truthful comment by someone who has purchased one. Normally folk say they are shit then buy one, then it instantly becomes the best van ever made.
The 13 plate I had for a short peroid didn't compare to a mk7 transit at half the price. The styling is nice but the size of them is too small for the camper conversion which is why people put a shitty fibreglass roof on it or worse a pop top, which is slightly better than sleeping in a tent.
I also found fuel economy shite and road noise was shockingly bad.
As for the crafter, that has to be the worst van ever placed on the road.

That's cheap! More like 5-6k now if they have been fully kitted out, new paint etc.

No they are overpriced shit but seem to be the only socially acceptable van to own if your into that sort of thing. Being socially accepted I mean.

I love my t5 but you're right a lot of idiots own them
I bought mine as a work van and while looking you soon find out that a lot of people think their high mileage tatty ex builders van are worth silly money.
Ive also never had so many people comment on any other vehicle I have owned ! An old boy a couple months back knocked on the customers front door to talk to me about my van !
