I know how turbos, supercharges work!
But not sure about V8, V12s etc and what the advantages are!
also how to VTECs work, is it a fuel injection???

Please can I have a sensible answer(s)

all i know is when i test drove the S2000 the vtec kicked in at 6000rpm and it felt like a turbo , sticks ya back im the seat

Yeah, I heard that VTECs have a similar feel to a turbo

yes u can add forced induction and mercs do indeed use superchargers. A v tec works by running 12vs then when it gets to a certain rev range the other 4 valves open up. I think thats right ne way!

There are a few types of vtec but i assume your talkin about the perforance enhancing engine, the vtec doesn't change the amount of valves running it controls how far the valves open up, so when the engines running fairly low rpm the vtec is not engaged, there for economical driving, when you hit vtec engagement point the valves open up wide for higher performance.. kinda tryin to simplify it for you, as the engine rpm is increased the wider the valves are open the easier it is for the engine to breath in more air/fuel mixture, also to exhale.

8 = number of cylinders (3,4,6,8,12)
you may see W8's etc

I think VTEC is something to do with an extra camshaft??

ie There's another camshaft that kicks in (takes over, rather) after a certain amount of revs (6krpm) which allows the cylinder valves to be open for a longer period of time.
This allows more fueling + air.

guess vtec provides the best of both worlds of economy @ lower revs and performance @ higher revs..

I _THINK_ this is what it is , but not sure.

I am right as I own one.. so.. on engagement it moves lobes on the camshaft to change engine setup. like I said earlier.

No. The lobes don't move, well apart from regular cam rotation obviously.

Vtec involves the 2 cam shafts however one cam shaft works to allow teh saving of fuel once you floor it and the engine hits a certain revs the second cam comes online and gives that little surge of power and it feeels soooo good

it engages the high cam lobe then. lol therefore moving lobes ' effectively binding the three pieces into one ' its hard to discribe when not refering to a page on it :

LOL! sorry, i didn't mean extra camshaft,
i meant the extra lobes on the camshaft.
the camshaft moves so that the 'other' lobes open/close the valves.
