Right, I got a Local home network setup between 2 machines, both runnin ME. This works fine the machines can both see each other.

I am now adding my machine (3rd comp) into the hub and linked up, got a link and everything and I run on XP pro. Thing is I share my internet connection with the other two machines fine they can connect through me, but when I try find my computer on the network it cannot connect to the other machines, cant find them.

Tried ping the machines response times out, (by name) try ping my own computer name and it times out???!!

Anyone any idea what the problem is please?? Workgroup names are the same computer names different so just confused!

thanks

You made sure you have the same network protocols installed as the other two machines?

TCP/IP might not be set up properly. Does it say unknown host if you ping 127.0.0.1?

Yeah specified IP addresses, all same bar last number, I can now ping the other machine from mine and get a response from using its IP address, but if I try to ping it by name I get unknown host.

That's why Windows can't resolve the host names, ie. can only use IP address.

I hope you aint using the same cable as you was using before?

If your connecting JUST 2 PCs up then you use twisted pair cable, if your going between a hub now then you cannot use twisted pair cable, just normal cat 5 coxal cable.

what you using mate?

you dont need to worry about dns yet, this aint vital for the network.
just make sure you got the ip address all the same, and subnet mask:
255.255.255.0

OR if you were using CAT5 cable anyway, use normal CAT5 cable and not a CAT5 cross-over cable
