this woz in tonights paper, officers were shocked to see "downright dangerous antics" during the first clampdown on cruisers. cruising web sites were also targeted to get the message across that the force will not tolerate dangerous driving.

Friday and Saturday night saw dozens of officers deployed as part of the spical operation to rid the south essex from boy and girl racers. around 450 cars congregated on southend sea front as well as hundreds more in the industrial estates and retail parks of basildon.

the mobile police units fitted with automated number plate recognition recorded the registration plates of over 600 cars travelling in and out of southend on a saturday evening.

apparantly police r gonna close sea front for one saturday to test it out! an their apparantly putting barriers up at basildon industrial estate.

Drive around a 5mph like the london taxis did!
Outside your local police station!Or while the police block the car park
Or organise some 100mph+ street racing!!!!!!!!!

This comes straight from the Essex Police web site

Cruiser websites targeted by police

Press Release - July 20, 2003
JY03_06

Police are this week set to get right to the heart of the car cruising fraternity by placing their ‘Get Tough’ message directly on cruising websites.

Such websites offer a direct means of welcoming the “honest” motorist to the county, while deterring the “hooligan element” with the threat of continued disruption to their offensive style of driving.

This past weekend saw the first phase of the special operation across Essex to rid the county of such boy and girl racers who threaten the lives of others by using the roads as their own personal race tracks.

The main problems arose in and around the Basildon and Southend areas where over 450 cars congregated on the seafront and at various industrial estates and retail parks. A number of arrests were made relating to drink-driving and driving whilst disqualified, while an even higher number of motorists were warned or reported for careless and dangerous driving. The mobile police units fitted with Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) recorded the registration plates of over 600 cars travelling in and out of Southend on Saturday evening, with 10 per cent of these found to have either vehicle defects or inadequate paperwork associated with them.

Operations commander Chief Insp Tim Stokes was on hand on Saturday night to witness some of the “crazy stunts” pulled and reiterates the touch stance the force is taking this summer to crackdown on such dangerous driving.

“It was good to see so many decent people visiting Essex and enjoying the county’s attractions; it’s these drivers we welcome with open arms, “said Chief Insp Stokes. “However, we saw some down-right dangerous antics by others during the course of the evening which were hard to believe. It’s this arm of the cruisers that we’re trying to deter and disrupt as it is usually them that wreck the lives of others.”

This intensive policing crackdown on reckless drivers will continue once more this weekend.

Too fast, too furious, too bad say police

Press Release - July 17, 2003
JY03_05

Young motorists from across the south-east and Anglia regions being notified of the “vigorous” measures police in Essex will be taking this summer to prevent dangerous driving behaviour.

The widespread clampdown and high-visibility presence will stop ‘boy and girl racers’ threatening others’ lives by using the county’s roads as their own personal race tracks and free arenas in order to show off to others.

During recent weekends, police have witnessed unacceptable driver behaviour, ranging from people pouring oil on main roads and ‘pulling doughnuts’ to motorists caught travelling at lethal speeds, with one recorded at 138mph on the A127.

The intensive approach by police, in conjunction with local councils and the Vehicle Inspectorate, will ensure visitors from outside Essex, as well as local residents, enjoy the county’s seaside resorts and other attractions in a safe environment, free from the threat of “hooligan elements” on the road.

Leading the special operation is Chief Inspector Tim Stokes who has witnessed the full range of “stunts” carried out by such drivers and is under no illusion as to what the force’s priority is when peoples’ lives are being recklessly risked.

“Every weekend we see some crazy stuff, with nearby crowds who are the potential, innocent casualties,” said Chief Insp Stokes. “We have several contacts through out intelligence sources, so we’ll be speaking to them in order to let them know of our intentions and the powers available to us.

“We’re concerned for those who want to really enjoy this summer’s weekend evenings in south Essex and will continue to ensure they do so in a safe environment.”

Recent legislation now provides police with a variety of methods to stop such dangerous activity from continuing to take place. New powers under the Police Reform Act 2002 allowing for the seizure of vehicles which are deemed to be in an unfit state or are being driven in an erratic fashion. As yet, Essex Police has seized one vehicle under this Act, as well as formally warning a number of motorists during the past few weeks whom, should they commit another similar offence, will see their cars taken away and off the roads for an indefinite period of time.

Together with everyday powers under the Road Traffic Act 1988, mobile police units fitted with Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) will monitor the influx of vehicles travelling towards Southend, with both covert and overt speed camera units ensuring revellers do not increase the risk of being involved in a high-speed crash.

Chief Insp Stokes added: “We take a very serious view of this sort of recklessness on our roads. Those involved in such crashes often receive horrifying injuries or else end up dying a violent death; as such we will always seek to prosecute any driver who causes such serious and violent crime. We will also gather and seize evidence and equipment in order to assist with these prosecutions.

“We admit that this is a big nut to crack, but if we don’t do something then someone will be killed. As such, we will use various bits of legislation in new and innovative ways to hammer home the message.”

During 2002, there were six people killed and another 113 seriously injured following crashes in areas close to Basildon’s Festival Leisure area and Southend seafront – popular venues for ‘boy racers’ to congregate and commit offences.

Police in Thurrock, Basildon and Southend will team up with their colleagues from Mobile Support, including the dog and air support units, who will use the full arsenal of resources, equipment and vehicles.

The message from Essex Police is clear: “We will prevent, disrupt and enforce a variety of measures to ensure dangerous motorists do not drive in this county, thereby ensuring public safety,” concluded Chief Insp Stokes.

ass, i was gonna head down to southend when i get my car back to show it off.

Dunno why they dont just accept that everybody heads down to southend on a saturday night. they should be trying to make it safer instead of closing it down otherwise we are just going to find somewhere else to go.

I hate people that streetrace, pointless risk to you and other around you. keep it to the track IMO.

i went onto their website and posted a comment regarding their action, not a nasty comment just want to see where we will stand if we go down there to meet up and enjoy the other cars. I have also asked their view on making it a legal event with maybe even a small charge to go towards the renovation of pier etc etc. Im sure real cruisers would not mind paying a couple of quid to have a good evening. If enough of us post comments to them about this, they may just listen and sort it out for us.
