you'll need to bag up a few things first.. like alternator, plugs, distributor, battery etc.. stick a plastic bag and an elastic band round 'em

Just wipe the engine with an oily rag

use autoglym engine and machinery cleaner followed by autoglym vinyl and rubber care, use cling film on stuff like alternator and coil first and disconnecting the battery wouldnt go a miss.
Then it should like nice and spangly like mine.
For tips on all valeting stuff just look on www.autoglym.co.uk it tells you everything you will need to know about car valeting, of course its just to sell their products but wehat the hell, they work so damn good anyway, especially their alloy wheel cleaners

It soon drys, and with steam cleaning, any water evaporates very quickly.

well after a while you will wear away all the laquer and then they will not look like new, the whole point of these products is they're made with the intent of not wearing away at the clear laquer coating.
I suppose you use fairy liquid on your bodywork aswell, and loreal styling range as wax, lol

Ok, point taken about the dizzies!
Autoglym alloy cleaner is great stuff, with soap you need to work at the brake dust, with this it just falls off with a wipe.
