To start off with never ever bump start a car with a cat converter on as you will flood it and cause it to go. Sounds like your starter motor if it starts like that.

cud be your batterey
if it wudnt start then after 40 it did
coz a baterey regains charge if u leave it a while
put a new batt on or borrow one try that
then check earth connections etc
i doubt itll be the starter
on a s reg
but stranger things have happened.
let us know what it was phella

The fuel pump relay is in the drivers side kick panel (by your feet).
Should be above the ECU and its the purple relay, think there about £6 from vaux.

Mines an S too and replaced my battery about 3 weeks ago, so try that first.
Get the voltage checked to make sure your battery holds 12v when the engines off and gets 13.5-14v when the engine is running.
And whilt you've got the multimeter check to see that the fuel pump relay is turning on and off properly.

i dont know sure but if the injectors are flooding gas all over the pistons, it wont really start, but it will after awhile.
get a new battery, then youll see what going on.
then get after the relay ect...
