Guys/Gals.
I'm 19, and have had my license for 1 year
I am looking to buy a Corsa 1.4 GLS post 1995 because
-It has a 16V 90BHP engine
-It's £1000 to insure fully comp (cheap for my age)
-It's cheap to tax
I can't think of any other super mini that is fast for the money...
I have £2000 to spend, I live in the bath/bristol area
Any advice on buying you could give me? obviously I don't want to buy one off a young man as it's likely it will have been thrashed.
I am aware that bog standard corsa handling is poor compared to rivals such as the Fiesta.....
What can I do to improve the ride, and how much would it increase insurance?
Many thanks in advance.

That will cost a bomb to insure and the SRI has the same engine as the 1.4GLS so it isn't worth it really is it

GLS is a 5 door aint it? Might as well look at the Sport. Its only a group 6 insurance.
Problems, B pillar rust, Head Gaskets are commen to go on these early 16v engines. Cam Belt + tensioners changed (cam belt every 30k). Service history (usual car stuff).
Handling isn't great as standard no, but a set of 15"s, dropped 35-40mm on springs and they go like go karts. Or if money permits, full suspension kits. Handling is no problem.
Lots of kits about, but everythings been pretty much done to a corsa.
0-60 in 10.5
112mph
90bhp @ 6000rpm
6620rpm limiter
X14XE, F13 gearbox

I'm not interested in body kits etc, I want to keep it looking as standard as possible or it'll get stolen!
Yeah it is a 5 door but I don't want people clambering past my seats etc and ruining the interior, i'm likely to carry lots of passengers .
The Sport will cost lots to insure no? And won't it more likey to have been thrashed? how can i tell if the head gasket might go? Will I get one of these cars for £2000?

Surely TPFT is useless to me as the car is worth £2000
How did you get such cheap insurance???
Is the sport/sri any better than the gls and why?

Slightly lower, 3 door, rear spoiler (think tha GLS has it too), sports interior (Recaro's) etc.
My car was worth £5k at the time, tpft is only good up to a £5k car.
Head gasket, look all around the head, if its covered in oil and feels like its lacking power, possible.

the GLS doesnt have the close ratio box though so technically the stats are slower than that of the 1.4 16v found in the sport & sri

I think you'll find it does have a close ratio gear box

Gambit, yes it still as the F13 gearbox.
And as for the quote, well, just called ringing around insurance companies and not letting myself get stitched up.
